Since I used to spend a lot of time on I-80 in Pa this is a pretty common sight even with the pushers. Most recently on my daily trips coming back from Ohio I would run into one at least once a week. There were 13 single lane construction sites that year from the Ohio line to my relay point half way into Pa. At each one they had to stop until the pilot car went ahead to check each site (usually bridges). This caused a 10-12 mile backup of traffic each time - talk about frustrating!

Usually you can't tell what the cargo is, but that last time it was mostly windmill generators.

    Yeah man.
    Miller has some impressive units.
The cool thing is they move those trailers at highway speed.

They were supposed to release a brass scale model of one of Miller's combos like that a few years back in 1/87 scale. Which i model and collect.
    Never came to fruition unfortunately.

Must be kind of boring driving the pusher...............

My job required me to travel the interstate everyday and would see those type heavy haulers pass through my area on occasion. They are massive, but I never saw one with a pusher.

I have seen a lot of these type rigs carrying wind turbine blades passing through the area, heading to northern Illinois , where there are a lot of the wind driven turbines for miles, too:

No driver in the pusher - remotely controlled from the puller cab including all the steering wheels on the trailers.

Whenever I see these rigs I think of them as an engineering marvel.

We moved a gas turbine generator from Fairbanks to Delta Junction using Carlisle who used 3 large Kenworth trucks and a trailer similar to that one. It had controls on the rear of the trailer for rear steering but was only used for maneuvering in town. It used one truck to pull, two to push. They didn't have fancy tow bars on the push trucks, just large rubber pads. The push truck drivers had it simple. Butt the truck up against the truck or trailer in front of you and set the cruise control. They were only needed for the hills. On flat ground they backed off the trailer and let the pull truck do all the work. It was pretty neat to see them do this. Apparently they use that trailer once in a while to haul something up the Dalton highway up to the North Slope for the oil companies. They left large streaks of rubber from the drive tires as they pushed that 100 Ton industrial turbine up the steep hills.

I like seeing this stuff also. There was some big machinery being delivered to one of the powdered metal plants (a press perhaps?) that came through the one horse town where the plant is. Amazing to watch the driver control the rear steering axles in a small town like that. When I saw that I thought it would have been nice to have a passenger in the truck to control the trailer - driver had enough on his plate guiding that behemoth through town.

Pushers are common on the trains that come through here also - not only to push the big hill just north of us but also to help hold back going down. 3 engines up front and 1 or 2 pushers behind. You can just feel the power in the ground when they put the fuel to those engines!
