    Movie: The Shootist

Last night "The Shootist" was on one of the TV movie channels, so I watched it again for the third or fourth time without commercials. It has always been one of my favorites, and I believe it was John Wayne's finest. The cast was outstanding; most of whom were hand picked by Wayne himself, including his favorite horse, "Ol' Dollar". It's hard to believe the movie, made in 1976, is almost 40 years old. Most of the cast are no longer with us, and I suspect there have been few movies ever made, either before or since, with such an assemblage of stars. In my mind it is one of the top three westerns ever made. Do I hear an "amen"?

    Have wings, will travel.

I think it was JW's last movie too. I think he would have liked to go out that way. Ron Howard is probably the only star left

Every time I watch any of the old John Wayne movies (and others from that era) I am just amazed at the quality of the movie and enjoy them so much. Then I see what is on regular broadcast TV these days including new movies - what has happened to the mentality the general public who likes that stuff?

I've been an avid western novel reader all my life and also enjoy these older western movies. I can see myself living there back then.

Amen! Hard to believe that John Wayne has been gone almost 36 years.

I was talking to a teenager (16 year old, just got her driver's license) and said something about John Wayne. To which she replied, "Who is that?" She had no idea. I was flabbergasted, but as I walked away it dawned on me, NOW I know what is wrong with the world today, and the younger generation.

The Shootist and True Grit were both my favorites. I lived in Montrose CO. for 15 years and just to the south of me was where True Grit was filmed so I'm partial to that JW movie just because I made it a point to visit all the scene sites there.

It brings back fond memories watching this video and love going over there to see friends and the scenery (<300 miles away)

I'm going to type this very slowly for you, dieselshadow, so that you can follow along.

I will be 29 on my next birthday. The girl I was speaking to just turned 16. That makes her the younger generation that is so woefully confused, with no direction in life. She might even think 29 is old. But hey, I still do not trust anyone over 30!!
