    Hearing Aids

My wife is going to need new hearing aids pretty soon and I'd like to know real life experiences and comments from others.
What do you have and how do you like them?

Don't fall for the tales that the hearing aid people spin. They run $5000 to $8000. Just yesterday I got a letter in the mail offering me $850 off a set of their hearing aids. I bought mine from Sams Club 3 years ago for $3400. There were the best at 96 channels. Ask any of the, so called hearing aid specialists, how many channels their hearing aids have. They will tell you that they do not know and look at you like you are crazy for asking such a question. In reality they are 16 channels and Sams Club sells the 16 channel for $1600.

My BIL would not listen to reason and 2 years ago, bought a set from a local hearing aid place for $5000. Of course, they are only 16 channel. And he hates them, so will not wear them. He is nearly deaf, so really needs them. They told him to come back in 2 weeks and they would be ready. When I bought mine from Sams Club, I wore them out of the store with a 90 day full return if I did not like them. She just hooks them up to her computer, sets them to match the results of your hearing test and you are ready to go. I went in the other day and had her increase the volume a little bit in the left ear.

I went with their best ones, because they can tailor them better to your needs. The more channels, the better they can configure them. My Sams Club audiologist tells me that she used to sell hearing aids at those kind of places and did not even know about the channels until she moved here and started in at Sams Club. By the way, she tells me that, in daily wearing, they usually only last 10-12 years. I don't know if I will get any longer life out of the 96 channel units.

Got mine at costco they are their kirkland brand cost 1600 if I remember correctly. Went back over a year later cause one didn't work. They fixed it within 15 minutes at no charge. Only major problem is hasn't solved the problem of wife's mumbling with her hand in front of her mouth so I still have a problem hearing her all told year and half later believe money well spent.

    WHAT?

All seriousness aside, I have some, but quit wearing them. They made annoying noises so much louder that I could not stand it. Like the timer on the stove, using the Sonicare, seat belt alarm in wife's pickup (but that ones loud on its own), others.

Maybe I need to try some different ones like at Costco that Rogero246 mentioned.

I sincerely hope they work well for her.

This should be an interesting thread for me to follow. After several hearing examinations at my ENT, they found that I am becoming tone deaf in my left ear. I have no problem with volume, but many high pitch frequencies I can't hear. If anyone has the same systems as me and got a hearing aid, has it helped.

Not trying to highjack your thread Keith, just interested in the different brands and retailers .

I have not been able to hear high frequencies for years. First thing I noticed when walking out to the road to get the mail was that I could hear the birds. I did not realize that I was even missing them. I also have tinnitus.

Sounds like you have been reading my mail. I've noticed that, on average, I hear men a better than women, due to the frequency. While watching TV I used to always ask my wife, "What did SHE say?" Now, we use subtitles.

I can't recall the ones I have being of much help in this matter. Maybe it's time to dust them off and give'em another go.

    Sorry

I also have tinnitus. Sometimes it gets so loud, I scream would you just shut up. Did your hearing aid help with the ringing?

It's all about hearing issues. You didn't hijack a thing.
    .....................................

This will be my wife's third set.
My wife uses (Now) Hear USA and the Siemens Pure BTE hearing aid, bluetooth compatiable. I will say any problems they do fix, repair or clean for free. ~$4,500 a set.

It is difficult to say as it is not as bad as it used to be and I am so used to it, I just do not pay much attention to it any more. The thing I notice the most is being able to pull a single voice out of a crowd so much better than I used to.
