I Got The ECHO DOT Today!,, Now, What To Do With It??

My family gave me a couple ECHO DOT devices today,,
    (and a controllable outlet adapter)

Well,, now I got to figure out what to do with it,,
    So far,
I know what time it is
    I know the weather
I can call anyone in my cell phone directory by just telling Alexa to call them

I tried to set up the TP Link WIFI MINI wall outlet adapter,, that needs some more effort.

Now, I gotta figure out what to make the ECHO DOT devices do next,,,

    Any recommendations??

Throw it away. You managed to get through life thusfar without one. So do you REALLY need it?

You can ask it to play music and link them together to play the same around the house.
You can set it up like an intercom around the house if needed. I haven’t tried that yet.

You can ask it to play games. Look up skills. You have to add skills to do stuff.
You can buy this remote and after setting up juts say things like “Alexa turn on the tv” “turn on football” https://www.bestbuy.com/site/logitec...?skuId=8574049

You can add smart bulbs, switches, garage openers, thermostats, etc

They're great at math, unit conversions, and word definitions.
You can use them for reminders, or as an intercom. timer, or alarm clock.
You link them to your calendar and email and check status verbally.
    Ring doorbell integration works well.
Just say the name of practically any radio station to play it (or try iHeart radio)
Routines can also include delays between on and off for temporary lighting, etc.
You can control lots of audio/video equipment with a Harmony IR hub, but the Harmony software is frustrating.
Maybe someone has had better luck with another brand?
Good decision on the TP-link plugs -- the Kasa app is solid. (If you need more, WalMart is usually cheaper than Amazon.)
I also added a few TP-link switches for lights aren't as accessible as I would like.
All of my wife's Christmas trees and decorations are on smart plugs (over a dozen...)
I now have Alexa voice control for my ecobee smart thermostats, too.
We also have two dots in my mother-in-laws house so we can 'drop in' or she can call any of her kids by voice if she has a problem.

Just spend some time searching online. There are more possibilities every day. I agree there is a bit of a privacy risk with any voice activated gadget. Just turn off voice purchasing don't make a habit of reciting your SSN and account numbers!

Add it to the burn pile?

See how long it stands up to down pressure on the FEL?

See how long it maintains signal buried as deep as your backhoe can dig?

See how it stands up to being run over by rear tractor tire?

    Kill it with fire?

    Did I mention fire?

Target for short range pistol fire?

I'd donate a 250 rnd belt out of the M37 to eliminate this problem.
or your choice of other avl options.

I get that these "things" perhaps can serve a usefull purpose.

I'm still disgusted I have to use a smart phone.

Had a guy offer to buy my business today...I'm seriously considering it to be done with Business phone , home & cell
    The....hmmm
In general I'm just sick and tired of being a slave to technosh!t.

I want my life back...I do enjoy a place like we have here but I was fine 30 yrs ago with nothing.

Theres a fine line we all must choose I suppose

Well,, to use the Echo Dot, I had to download an APP to my smart phone,,
Actually, so far, I have had to download TWO APP's,,, to use the DOT,,

Maybe when I got my phone ~+3 years ago,,I downloaded some APPs, but, this was the first APP since the phone was mostly new,,,

I just asked Alexa what time it is,,,

Wife got one and that’s what I asked her. What good is it? Don’t do nothing that’s useful. She said it’s useful for a lot of things, so I asked it to let the dog out......nothing. Asked it to turn on coffee.........nothing. Asked it to let the dog in................nothing.
    Thanks Bob
