    Would you have called 911?

We live on a long straight section of road with a few hills that goes under interstate highway overpass that's just east of the house. For reasons defying understanding, people manage to run off the road here weekly and hit the pillars of the bridge probably every other month. Tonight, I heard some idiot come over the hill west of the house with the throttle wide open and wind the engine all the way to redline before I heard a tremendous booming series of bangs coming from the direction of the overpass and then dead silence. My wife actually yelled to check to see if I was OK because it was so loud in the house she thought I'd fallen down the stairs. I immediately called 911 to report an accident and clearly told the dispatcher that I hadn't gone out to see if there had been a crash but I explained what I'd heard. The dispatcher sent fire and police. 3-4 minutes later, I heard the same engine restart followed by some awful grinding noises and the sound of that same engine slowly coming back down the road headed back to the west where it had come from. I called 911 again and again told the dispatcher that I'd heard a car leave the scene. The fire department showed up anyway.

Would you have called 911 in the first place or would you have let it go since you didn't see anything (and don't want to become known as the crank who calls 911 all the time for no reason)?

This is one of those things that I don't think I can answer without having been there. I *think* I would have gone down and taken a look before calling but... again, who knows?

You did what you thought was the right thing to do and it's more than 80% of the rest of the population would have done. Don't 2nd guess yourself.

Just by you living there and experiencing the frequency of these mishaps, I'd say you were justified in making the call.
In most cases, prompt communication with authorities can mean the difference between life and death when it comes to response time.

I would have likely called while I was on my way to the scene to evaluate the situation and see if I could help.

We have a similar issue with the hill in front of our house. It is an awkward curve and people are always with rolling their car or ending up in the neighbors barn because they can't follow the road.

YES, same as you did. Told 911 sounded like a wreck at that location.

Absolutely call, you did good! The highway department needs to know officially through a 911 call also in case of possible structure damage and accident prevention measures.
