I couldn't imagine lugging around that much extra weight, those chains are heavy!

Those appear to be the "old" style pull tabs; I doubt they have made them in 40 years. Last one I saw was at a park where a car show was being held; someone moving a table had scuffed up the dirt and uncovered it. They were roundly criticized because they came completely off the can when pulled, and were randomly disposed of...like in the park.

    To quote Jimmy Buffett:

"I blew out my flip flop; Stepped on a pop top
Cut my heel had to cruise on back home..."

I recall stories of them found in fish's stomachs; apparently thrown into the water by some of my fishing buddies. I also remember that some ingenious person found they could make all kinds of items...like women's purses...from them. I doubt your Grandad had anything special in mind, other than just making a chain of sorts; I have seen several of those.

I vividly recall an occasion...don't remember what it was exactly, but it was maybe 50 years ago...when I recognized a friend from college, drinking with some other guys that I didn't know. One of them offered me a beer, and I accepted. He opened it for me...and took the tab and dropped into the opening in the beer can, then gave it to me. Yeah, we had our environmental nazis then. Maybe I shouldn't have, but I took it as an insult, but not to the extent that I didn't drink my beer.

I recently donated two 5 gallon cans full...of the newer style...to the McDonald House. Now before you jump to conclusions, it took maybe 20 years to collect them, and included about 3 gallons from a friend's estate; plus my yearly ribfest for the car club and Elks. For the record, Keystone and I contributed our part.

    P.S.

Now I'm betting that was one heck of a smile! Did you memorialize it with a picture? Hmmm? If so, let's see it!
