    Don't work

Walked by this in the warehouse and asked what was wrong with it. The reply was pretty much "Don't work". I asked what was going to be done with it. The reply was "Throw it away". I brought it home and plugged it in. When I flipped the switch, this happened.

Nice when things work out like that.

Maybe the sign was referring to the people in the work area?

In my 34 yrs of hvacr work....I've had a couple of service calls where the thermostat was in the off position. No other problems, service it and on my way. One gas furnace was unplugged, two or so didnt have the door on good after they had replaced the filter.(micro switch in the door)
But the biggest ....more than one call where the people didnt know it had a filter...and they had lived there a couple of years or so.(No airflow and icing up)

I'm not really sure which is more depressing... Someone's possibly complete inability to troubleshoot a problem (like make sure it's plugged in and turned on) before declaring it non-functioning or their absolute lack of a grasp on the English language ("Doesn't Work" is correct).

Not that I'm saying this happened here, but I've seen this scenario.

Someone sees a nice item they would like to have, but they don't really want to buy one or steal it, so they label it broken even though it's a perfectly good unit. If someone happens to try and fix it or test it, and finds it OK, then no gain/no loss, it was a mistake. They leave it sitting around for someone else to toss it into the dumpster. They just wait, then load it up and take it home. Now taking it out of the dumpster isn't really stealing, it's just picking through garbage, right?

It always made me suspicious when I saw a relatively new item with a broken tag on it being thrown out.

    Just my 2 cents here.

Yep. That sort of stuff definitely happens. It's mostly on items that a store "takes out of stock" to use at the store level as opposed to an item off of the shelf, though (those are sent back and not thrown out). There are some items that are inexpensive relative to their cost to ship. Those are often NOT returned back if they're defective, and those are the most likely candidates to be treated like you describe.

I asked around today and it seems that the fan was plugged in to test it. The step that was missed was that tricky part about the power switch. There were many laughs during my description of step #2 in my troubleshooting process: "Flip power switch to Hi, or Low setting".

Anyway, it's still my new garage fan. I just have to not give in to its message of "Don't work" when I'm out there
