sad day in my vehicle stable

It was a sad evening tonight. No more VWs are in my stable.

I bought my first VW back in 1985, it was a 1973 Beetle. It went through a few paint jobs and bits of body work, and left me in 1992 as a black Baja Bug with a 140 HP 2.1 liter engine in it. That was a fun car! Stock Beetles had a 1.6 liter 40 HP engine.

In 1991 I bought a 1990 recovered theft Jetta with about 10k on it. I was working at a VW restoration business with a friend, and another friend of ours bought it at the insurance auction and we had to fix a few things and then I bought it. I got rid of it in 1997 with 150k on it. My friends always picked on me for getting it. They always asked why some young guy would want a lame 4-door sedan. When they saw my "old man car" blow the doors off of many a "sports car" flying up hills and around curves at 100 MPH, they stopped asking.

I went a few years with no more VWs, and my wife and I almost bought a Passat in 2000. In 2005 we bought a new Passat TDI diesel. Tonight we traded it in on a new car for my wife. It had 160k on it and I don't have any complaints. My wife wanted something sportier, and she said she had had enough VWs in her life for now. She was looking at the new Audis, but went with a 2011 Infiniti G37xS. I'll admit it, it's a bad ass car!

So no VWs, and my only diesel is my green 2520. I'm sure at some point I'll end up with another VW. Maybe when my kids are old enough to drive.

I'm sure you could find a little Rabbit diesel pickup somewhere, for something.

Just try finding one of those things in running condition! I have an Oliver OC-46 crawler. The Hercules engine in it needs a rebuild, and the gasket kit and new cylinder liners and pistons are almost $2000! I tried looking for one of the old Datsun (or was it Mazda) or VW diesel pickups, and they are nowhere to be found, at least not for insane amounts. I was going to stick the little diesel into the OC-46.

I like crawlers. Tracks are fun, in small doses.

Would an old Mercedes diesel fit?

I never looked into the old Mercedes diesels. There's not much room in the OC-46, so it would need to be a small 4 cyl to fit. There's no need for a turbo either, as an OC-46 isn't exactly a sport model.

Well, I may have an OC-46 pic or two laying around, but I need my wife to stop driving around in the G37 long enough for me to snap a photo or two. I'll grab a few tomorrow and load them up. The AWD system on it is amazing. Thank goodness it came with a 120k warranty (yes, 120,000 miles). It only has 19k on it now. Well, as of last night it did, my wife may have put 500 miles on it today. I think I'm going to be tossed outside and she's going to put the car in our bedroom.

Oh, OK. I thought I was having picture viewing issues with my computer.... Seems that happens once in a while.

The old Mercedes 240D was a 4 cylinder, non turbo. I'm sure that engine was used in other cars as well.

We went out to dinner tonight and the snow started while we were out. The AWD is excellent. I'd give it a little extra gas going into a slight turn, and once the rear wheels started slipping you could feel the front wheels kick in. I wasn't going crazy, and no one else was on the roads. My wife was yelling at me and I told her how would you know how the car will react unless you test it out. If you put it in "snow" mode, it stays in AWD all the time, and slows the throttle response. I tried to get the wheels to spin in snow mode and it wouldn't do it. Pretty impressive.
