    Army can armrests

    I know I have seen a post where someone has done this and had a few pictures. I was wanting to do something like this on my tractor but I have had no luck finding the post. If someone could point me in the direction I need to go it would be greatly appreciated.

    I assume you're talking about ammo cans when you say "Army cans". I can't recall anyone using them as an armrest on their tractor although many folks have used them for tractor toolboxes - mounted to their ROPS and other various places on their tractors.


    As a Jeeper, I am also an ammo can aficionado. Jeepers are notorious for finding innovative uses of ammo cans for storage in their Jeeps. I am guilty of that as well - I have an ammo can console in my Jeep. I removed the locking factory console (could be popped open with a screwdriver) and replaced it with the can on a custom mounting plate. (I had a buddy that owns a sheet metal brake so I was able to fab up a nice mount.) That's been in place for probably 7 or 8 years and works great as an armrest and console. But, beware that you're going to want to put some sort of padding on the top of it. The padding isn't so much for the comfort of your arm, but in an open Jeep, the top of that metal ammo can gets HOT! You'll run into the same thing on a tractor, especially if it's an open station model.

    Yes!! I finally found your post last night. For some reason I thought they were ammo cans. I was curious on how they were mounted. I wanted to avoid welding if I could. I tried U bolting the angle to the rops but couldn’t get them to hold tight enough to keep from falling down under the weight of the box and chains.

    I welded the 1/4” thick, 2”x2” angle iron directly to the rops. I also removed my factory arm rests and now have a bit more room in the cockpit and use the toolboxes as arm rests. I couldn’t be happier. Also note the extended hydraulic lever, another great mod.

    I am familiar with the “liability” and made my own decision. I come from a family of lawyers and judges, I’m a firefighter assigned to a heavy rescue and have seen the unpleasant aftermath of a couple tractor rollovers and I have a degree in physics. Not trying to quote my resume, just explain that I understand what is involved in the decision to weld on the rops.

    Do you have any trouble being able to get your gas cans high enough to empty them with the toolbox over the fill? What are the stainless rods sticking up near your loader control? Toolboxes look great.

    The stainless looking rod is the original loader lever for comparison. The green lever you see with the black knob is my extended hydraulic loader control, that is a little taller and situated perfect for use with the new toolboxes as arm rests.

    I have a couple different style diesel cans. Overall filling is not an issue, the can is at a little bit of an angle and rest against the toolbox when filling. My blitz 5 gallon can with modified vent flows fast and easy, love that can for dumping a full 5 gallons in at a time. My no spill 5 gallon can fills a little slower, but still works well.

    As stated before zero regret. I doubled my storage space, for better arm rests, gained some room in the cockpit and maintained a factory type look.

    I wish you lived closer. 12 pack of beer and I would weld yours on for ya.

    I get welding on rops scares some people and no hard feelings if that’s you or someone else reading this. But my weld quality and design is such that nothing is lost in terms of structural integrity and design parameters. After all this is my tractor.
