    1025R Smokey Start Up

    Hello all.
    Newwer 1025r owner here.
Just wondering if it's normal for these machines to blubber slightly for a few seconds on cold start up.
I cycle the glow plugs, and set the throttle about 1/4 or so. Starts immediately, blubbers/smokes and then cleans up, runs great.
As colder weather is approaching, I was wondering what others experience.
The manual states to set the throttle at approx. 1/2 then back it down after starting to let it warm up. That just seems really high to me.
Also when really cold, do you guys cycle the glow plugs more than once?
    Thanks, G

It is fairly normal with this engine, some more some less than others. I’ve never done the half throttle start, just can’t bring myself to do. However, it was explained a little to me by the service manager at my dealer. Because of the tier 4 emissions standards these engines are run so lean the half throttle start is to give it extra fuel for start up. I would suggest the block heater kit, around $180, and yes, I cycle the glow plugs twice when cold.

Also had the smoke and rough start on first cold morning, then started plugging in the engine block heater about an hour before starting it up and then it started like it was summer. No problems since

    OK. Thanks. I feel better.
I did get the block heater but it's not been cold enough to use it yet.
Didn't know how many time I could cycle the glow plugs.
    Thanks again. George

Back in December 2000 I bought a new Jetta TDI. It was about zero one day and I went out to start it before I left work. It was close to the door and when i started it the smoke was rolling past the office windows and you could hear it sputtering and knocking inside. The receptionist said “that’s your new car”?

If you decide to add the block heater, you can save a few bucks by purchasing the heater portion from aftermarket suppliers. You'll still require the engine block adapter, which I've only been able to source from JD. Also, the engine block adapter is only partially painted. So you'll need a can of high heat gloss black spray paint.

This is not normal for a diesel. My 2520 fires off clean as can be with a cold start - not a stumble or more than initial puff of smoke. These 1-series are known for the stumble at cold start.

Short 18 second video of my cold start at 20*F at idle.

That's how my 1023 was too Stan, but not this 2025, she stubbles for a few seconds at 40*.
