I am still shopping tillers for my 1025r. There seem to be a ton of different brands, colors, and sizes. I am seeing a bunch of 4 footers that look barely used. It looks like price isnt so much an issue. Im thinking there may be some light 5 footers that the 1025 will handle but I like the idea of a heavier, 48 inch for this machine. Obviously green paint adds a lot ro the cost but Ive found a nice 1149 that from the pictures, appears barely used, a 2015. It is at the JD dealer where I bought the tractor, almost accross feom my house, but at a different branch, 100 miles away. I assume I can get ut delivered there for nothing anf drive over to pick it up on the tractor. I was able to stop at TSC this morning and looked at the yellow tiller there. 6 tines, gear driven and HEAVY. With the discount there, it would be $1260, the same as the listed ASKING price on the 1149. Between the 2, is it worth trading gear drive and a warantee for a chain, green paint, a local dealer, and the ability to offset? It also looks like the 1149 may be slightly lighter. Any thoughts?
I only have experience with one tiller, mine is a County Line 48" like you mentioned. It is a very rugged tiller and does a very good job. Tillers are very basic in design but the one at TSC is a good tiller IMO.
Its odd that the orange one there is chain drive, 4 tines, sheer pin unstead of slip clutch... and $200 MORE. The yellow one has a slip clutch while the orange one and the 1149 have sheer pins. Im not quite sure if I care either way but it seems like usually the slip clutch costs MORE.
Woods RTR48.30 is a very heavy duty reverse tine tiller. It weighs in around 500lbs. Reverse tine has a tendency to till deeper and finer than forward tine tillers. Here in Ohio I paid $1650 last spring for a brand new unit. My 1025R handles it without any problem, however, I think anything larger would be too much. The attached link will take you to Woods.
Reverse till is like a three to one pass. I didn't think much about it in till the neighbor came over with his. Amazing the difference. This guy above is talking about the one I want for my 1025r but I already have access to a four foot frontier.
I just stopped qnd talked with the salesman. He is having the 1149 moved up to th8s branch this week so I can see it, no strings attached. He diznt have a new one set up for me to look at. At least this way I can see how 8ts mde. Another thing Im not sure about...I think the County Line is reversible. The dont think the 1149 is.
In my my opinion. A barely used Deere vs a new non-Deere is an easy decision to buy the Deere. I have 2, one new, one old-1982 and one older yet 1970 that I sold. All three were very good and while I have never needed a part for any of them I am sure I could still get them.
That being said Tractor time with Tim has a good video on this. Any tiller you buy you will like.
The Frontiers are decent Tillers Woods actually has the contract to Produce Frontier equipment Though I think they further Sub the Frontier Tillers out to a Italian company. The Italy Is Know for having companies that Produce great tillers. It Might even Be the same company that Produces some of the Deere Labeled Tillers.
Anyways Back in 2017 I was all set to buy a 1142 to go with My 1025R. But the wait Time for getting it In(back ordered) So I went with a 647. But actually had My dealer still been a Land Pride dealer I would Have ordered a Land Pride Tiller. Because I tend to like there tillers a Bit better than Deere's. But that said I think it worth Looking at the used 1149. 3point equipment to me really doesn't Matter what the Brand is. Going with a used Frontier is a good way to save some money for the other have to have Deere Name Brand Products. If the tines Look really worn I say Pass But if it Looks Good. Go with it:bigthumb:
King Kutter makes a 54 inch tiller that I have some experience with. I found it was excellent as it covers the 1025's tracks without offset, has gear drive, six tine, and slip clutch, however no reverse rotation.
It is a good compromise between a 4 and 5 footer as it draws less hp than the 5 footer would and the scut handled it pretty well but I had to ride the brake a little when busting virgin sod as it is a forward rotation and it wanted to propel me.
Is the County Line tiller a reverse tiller? Im starting to lean toward just getting that. The Deere salesman said the barely used 1049 was sold but he didnt realize it. I think tonight is the night they have a special deal for "neighbors", 10% off. If I remember its gear drive, 6 tines, a slip clutch, and I THINK reversable. With 10% off it would be $1260
Reverse rotation is definitely the way to go. It’s a night and day difference in the quality, especially if you have hard ground. I have filled a lot of gardens and yards for people. I had a big heavy duty Woods for my 3046r and have an RTR0550 for the 1025r. It’s not the heaviest roller made, but being reverse rotation, it will go deeper and out perform the heaviest forward rotation that the 1025r will lift. I would definitely check out the RTF0550. Do a YouTube search for Milharri I have some videos on there.
Its interesting that now that I have done more searching I am seeing conflicting reports. About half of people are saying the CL 4 ft tiller is reversable, the other half say no. With opinions being pretty one sided that reverse tilling is so much better, I think it makes sense. I cant find info either way on Tarter or TSC. I may have to actually drive to TSC and read their owners manual and see if I can find it
Ok, after finally finding the County Line manual on line, I found detailed instructions on REVERSING DIRECTION. It appears to be a pretty big project! Does anyone know if these tillers are shipped in reverse or forward??
I spoke too soon! After CLOSELY reading the directions, I can see this looks pretty easy and not a big deal. It would he even easier to do before filling the gear box and completing the initial assembly if it is not fully assembled before puchase. Again...it would be important to know if it was shipped in forward, or reverse. Im thinking the blades would give that away depending on which direction the sharpened edge faces. My guess isnthat thry are shipped in forward mode and need to be reversed.
Call The Manufacturer who is either King Cutter 205-487-3202 or Tarter 1-800-733-4283 I Believe Tarter Makes the standard Line and King Cutter Makes the Sub Compact Line of County Line tillers
If the tiller Looks Like the Yellow one then it is a Tartar . If the tiller Looks Like the Organ one then it is King Kutter But the Black Gear Box is the dead give away for Tartar:bigthumb:
Tarter makes the County line tiller at my local TSC. I checked it out last week. They appearassembled to till forward. I would probably flop it before using it. I looked at a video and the directions in the maula and it doesnt look like such a big deal. They dont have a 4 footer in stock so at least it wouldnt be one thats been sitting out for months. The 5 ft models they have in stock look well built but also look like they have been there a while. I know itll get dirty and rusty over time but Id rather not buy it that way. The sales person said they would issue a raincheck. I can get $100 off by being in their Neighbors program and then pay for it when it arrives. What other brands are 1)reverse tilling, 2)gear drive, and 2) built as heavy, and 4)less than $1200 new? It sure seems like a good option
I just picked up a King Kutter Professional 5ft tiller in Green color from another member on here. I have ran 2 different land pride tillers and one frontier. A guy I work with tilled my garden last year with a King Kutter and it did an excellent job, but not that any of them did a bad job. My thoughts are a tiller will be one of your best tools on the three point, no matter what brand you choose. For me, I have a rural king 20 minutes away if I need parts. To me I would rather have ones that heavy, gear drive, and 6 tines per flange.
