    Cool Hydraulic Cylinder Coating?

    Guys,

I've got a 1026R with the H120 loader. The hydraulic cylinders used to have chromed pistons (shafts) but the ones on my new loader are almost black. Does anyone know what they are coating these pistons with these days. It sure doesn't look like any chrome I ever saw. Thanks.

Prince sells cylinders that the rods are plated with "RoyalPlate Plus"
I don't know if that's what you got or not.
I don't know if hard chrome is old school and something better has come along or if it's cost cutting and not as good, but cheaper.

I don't fully understand the chemistries involved, but I was under the impression that chrome is a plating that is chemically bonded to the surface, whereas nitriding is a chemical process that changes the composition of the outer surface of the metal. As such nitriding can't really "chip off" like chrome can. You can still gouge through it, but if you do it won't start flaking off like chrome.

Also, I believe the black color is due to an oxidation process. Rust is an "oxidation process", as is firearms bluing. What this means is that all being exposed to air will do is make it oxidize further, in effect self-repairing any scratches. A big gouge or scratch can still start leaking, but the rods really shouldn't be prone to rust. Nitride coatings are among the most wear-resistant coatings known.

    Andy and others,

Thanks for the useful info. My black pistons are one more reason to be a proud John Deere owner.
