    OE Top link vs after market?

    Sorry for asking what is probably considered a dumb question, but I just don't have the experience yet. I purchased a 2305 this morning that is missing the top link for the rear hitch. I called my local JD dealership and they quoted me a price of $384 for the link. Since a cat 1 top link at Tractor Supply is around $20, I am assuming the JD link is higher quality? Is that it? Do I need the OEM JD link for grading my driveway with a 5' rear blade? Or will a standard cat 1 aftermarket link work? I'm just trying to understand if their is more than meets the eye here. Thanks guy's.

    An aftermarket top link will work just fine. No reason to spend the extra for JD in that situation.

    I've used the TSC links for years with no problems. The JD is outrageously over-priced in my opinion, they are both just basically a turnbuckle. The TSC ones are so cheap I just buy one for every piece of equipment and leave it on it so I don't have to re-adjust when changing to another piece of equipment. Just my $.02, YMMV.

    I have used TSC top links on various tractors for several years with zero issues. The 3 point on most compact tractors isn't going to lift enough weight to be worried IMO. I would say if doing some serious ground engaging work having the beefier top link would be needed but we with compact tractors would run out of traction before the top link would fail I think.

    As everyone has said, an aftermarket link will do everything the JD link can do. No advantage to having the OEM link because it cannot do anything more than the TSC link.

    It looks like the 4044R top link is the best deal in town.
    Insane when looking at the models and prices laid out together to compare. I have noticed the factory top link on my current tractor rusts FAR more than any other top link I have experiences with both on the farm and the personal tractors I've owned in the past. I regularly combat the rust on the threads and although it's no big deal and I'm not complaining about it, it is something I easily noticed. As far as the high prices, well they do have nice handles to grab onto for adjusting the top link so I'm sure JD is charging a premium for that.

    My 2305 was also missing the top link when I purchased the tractor. Based on the fact that the ball sockets were rusted in place and the PTO shaft looked like it had never been coupled to anything, it may have never been used.

    The dealer put one on that looked just the ones from TSC or FleetFarm. The anodized finish also holds up much better than black paint. Galvanizing and Anodizing prices in the US have gone unrealistic with the regulations.

    How do these people take themselves seriously? Almost $400 for a $10 turnbuckle with some ball joints?

    What you're seeing is some kind of perverse pricing model...there are just enough unfortunate souls out there who lose their top link, and let JD rape them up the exhaust pipe because they don't realize they can get one that works just fine from TSC.

    Just get the link from TSC, they are rated for much bigger, heavier, stronger tractors that also have a Cat 1 hitch.

    That's just it. The most expensive top-links, the ones for the 2-series don't have any grab handles. They just have little metal loops that you have to stick a bar or something in to turn. The el-cheapo TSC top-link I had on my old Ford 9N had a nice T-bar handle for adjustments. I think the 1-series links have something similar.
