Briggs & Stratton engine problem on DRTrimmer

I have a DRPower estate trimmer (DRTrimmer) with a Briggs and Stratton 625E engine.

According to my wife, it was running--threw off the mow ball (I have to replace them once a season generally), and then she shut it down.

    Now it will not start.

Using electric start, it would never seem to catch, but would backfire a couple of times.

I pull the plug, hold my finger over the whole and crank with electric start and I get zero compresson. I know that some of these engines have a compression-release system to make starting easier, but there is absolutely zero compression.

I pulled the head. Valves and piston are oscillating correctly but I cannot tell if the valves are fully seating, nor can I tell if the piston rings are good.

I think I have a dead engine ...any comments??????????

The compression release normally fails in the *won't release compression mode* causing the starter to have
a hard time trying to spin the engine under full compression.

Zero compression sounds like a valve stuck open, if you're lucky.
Since it's backfiring, maybe exhaust valve stuck slightly open?

Briggs engines have been going down the dumper since their machine work (cylinders, etc.) are being made
in China, bad, horror stories abound about that.
