Maintenance Manual Paper or CD Version

I need to pick up a maintenance manual for my X590 GT. I've always been a paper manual guy but at twice the price of the factory CD manual I thinking otherwise.

So here's the big question. If I use the CD version will it allow me to print out the pages I need? I would rather dirty up those pages when in the garage instead of lugging around a laptop. Still I love the quick convenience of the paper manual.

The electronic copy is just a PDF file on a CD. You can print the entire thing or just print one (or a few) page(s) as you need them.

The paper factory manuals are HUGE and can be somewhat difficult to find the item you are looking for. By using the PDF you can search for subjects and find them instantly. Something as simple as "drive belt" can be impossible to find in the paper manual but only take seconds on the PDF. You can also copy the PDF to a tablet or phone for instant access.

There is really no need to ever print the whole thing, Just print out a few pages on whatever you are working on.

Beautiful beaches, moderated summer heat and lake effect snows. Right where I want to be.

    Yes.......

I prefer the book as well. When I am going to get into something where I need the manual and it might get dirty, I just make copies of my pages and put them in sheet protectors for use in the garage.

I also don't like having the laptop out in the garage. I ordered the book despite the higher price as I like the paper manual.....I have a commercial printer at home as well as a commercial copier so I could print the book had I bought it on CD, but I like the book so that's what I bought.....

Also, when I am done with the pages in the garage, I put them in a 3 ring notebook kept in the garage as I sometimes write notes on them.

I went with the paper for my 2038R. I wish I had went with the CD. It does not have a nice cover like my other John Deere manuals and it looks like they just printed it and cheap paper and stuck big three posts through it. No cover even on that or 3 ring binder. Of course it is like 2000 pages so it is 4 inches thick but it was not what I would’ve expected from John Deere.

This was a while ago, but when I looked it up, it's cheaper to buy the cd, then have staples print you a copy.

    Printed manual $142.80

    CD Manual $74.05
    Staples printed copy $50.40
    CD+Staples copy $124.45

I'm still failing to see why anyone would want to print the whole thing but... to each his own. :-)

If you take it somewhere to be printed, copy the PDF to a blank CD or thumb drive first. Some places refuse to print it because they think it is copyrighted. Which of course it is but if you check the security properties of the PDF they have it set to "printing allowed" so obviously JD intended for customers to print sections of it.

Given I wanted the manual on-hand, I was not impressed with the quality of paper used, or the quality of print there on. A manual should have a service life, what Deere is tossing out, does not. I stand by this, based on the fact every Operators Manual I've gotten to date, since buying my Garden Tractor, has been of the same lesser quality. Just another sign of disposable mentality. Then there are the addendum's. (Correct me if I'm wrong) To my knowledge, any changes, and/or updates made after the fact, are not provided to the consumer. That goes in saying the same for the .PDF format, unless you are an authorized service. That being the case, how does one come by attaining these addendum's so the manuals are up-to-date?

Some of you may have the luxury of attaining the addendum's. Most can not, to my knowledge.
I chose to get the manual on CD. I still haven't figured out how to "search", and the PDF is not sectioned by category. That to me is ridiculous.
