Grand Rapids man killed in farm accident

This is why we should pull from the drawbar (under the axle):

NEW ERA, Mich. - A Grand Rapids man was killed in a farming accident Monday evening.

According to the Oceana County Sheriff's Office, it happened at a farm in the 4600 block of South 44th Ave in New Era around 7:20 p.m.

Deputies arrived on the scene and found the 64-year-old -- identified as Gary Mills -- had been operating an older, Oliver tractor on a family member's farm.

It appeared to deputies that Mills was trying to expand a power take off shaft on a mower and had it chained to a tree and to the tractor in an attempt to pull it open. During this time, the tractor flipped over and Mills was killed in the incident.

Assisting at the scene were the Oceana County Sheriff's Office, M.S.P., Shelby-Benona Fire Department, Life EMS and the Oceana Sheriff's Victim Services Unit.

That area is a big fruit producing area with a lot of apples and other fruit trees. Rolling hills and light soil........Just east, slightly SE of there about 25 miles or so is the Gerber Baby Food world headquarters and their manufacturing centers in Fremont, MI, which is a small community as well.......

Hate to hear of such things happening. So it sounds like he was trying to extend the PTO shaft and somehow had the tractor chained to a tree????? I am having a hard time trying to visualize exactly what he was doing with pulling on the PTO shaft. Bottom line, we have seen time and time again how the tractors will rotate right over backwards when the forward momentum is stopped and the tractor (usually gear driven) will keep digging and pull the machine right over backwards.

I am always amazed at how Kenny locates all these news stories.......the man never rests.......but we do appreciate his efforts to keep everyone safe and aware of such dangerous activities...
