    Installation of Electronic Trailer Brake Controller

    Hello again folks,

    Well, I just completed the final chapter of getting my truck and trailer ready for transporting my 1025R to my cabin, and to help good friends where possible. I installed the Electronic Trailer Brake Controller in my pickup. If I would have had it installed, it would have cost me $150-$250 depending on brand of controller. I installed a Reese Brakeman Controller (part #74643) for under $40!!!

    I purchased the Brake Controller off of Amazon for $38 including shipping/tax. Here's the Reese Towpower 74643 Brakeman Digital Brake Control: Automotive

    Don't pay attention to the compatibility check on the Amazon website. After phone call with Reese customer service, this controller is universal as long as you know the wiring for your vehicle.

    Anyone with a late model Silverado (mine is a 2011), the factory wiring harness is tucked up under the dash near the steering column. Mine had blunt ends on the wires. The wiring matched up like this:
    - Truck Red Wire (12VDC) to Controller Black Wire
    - Truck Dark Blue Wire (trailer brakes) to Controller Blue Wire
    - Truck Light Blue Wire with White Stripe (from brake pedal to activate controller) to Controller Red Wire
    - Truck White Wire (ground) to Controller White Wire.

    Mount Controller in a convenient location. Orientation...vertical...horizontal...or something in between is not relevant on this model controller.

    Last step is to remove fuse box cover under the hood near driver's fender. Connect red wire with loop terminal tucked between fuse box and inside wall to lug on front of fuse panel with 8mmx1.25 nut. You may have to install 40A fuse in box...mine had fuse already installed.

    Adjust controller IAW included directions...DONE!

    Took me all of half hour at a small fraction of cost.

    BTW...I have NO affiliation with Reese or etrailer. Just wanted to share an easy install with all of you to help save some of those precious and hard earned $$$.

    Its been a few years since I put the brake controller in my dodge 2500. I had to drill 2 holes to mount the controller. The controller plugged right in the trucks plug. It was that easy.
    My dads new f150 came with a brake controller built in the truck.

    Reese is owned by the same company that owns Tekonsha and a few other "towing-related" companies. Overall, good stuff.

    While I have no issue with being cost-conscious, I had absolutely NO issue paying $140 for a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller and wiring harness (which, it turns out, I didn't need because my truck came with what I needed) to pull my equipment trailer. I wasn't looking to "pay the minimum" for the minimum equipment I needed. Making that 10k trailer stop was what mattered to me.

    You've got a $40,000 truck with a $15,000 tractor on a trailer that's worth a few thousand dollars as well. A quality controller is what you want.

    2011 JD 2520 with 200cx loader, 61" materials bucket, and Artillian JDQA Pallet Forks (42" forks). 62D MMM, ballast box, turfs, and loaded rears.
