    New Dump Trailer - Protection Frame protection ideas needed...

    I just took delivery of my new dump trailer! Its powder coated, but obviously after it is welded together. I'd like to seal the seams where the fenders attach to the dump body, where the dump body connects to the sub frame and on the under side of the dump body where the floor sits on the C-channel cross members... anywhere salt and mud could work its way in between two layers and start devouring my new investment...

    I'm looking for any ideas... i thought about seam sealer or black silicone for the seams and then spraying bed liner to the underside of the bed and the main frame...

    Spraying something like this... Al's Liner. DIY Truck Bed Liners!

    I have a Loadtrail 16' bp that I purchased last fall. I'm kicking myself for going with powder coating( Loadtrail offers auto paint as an option).
    I've decided to seal mine with Fluid film. Mine sits during the winter and this spring I can see small amounts of rust everywhere the PC wasn't able to get into. I bought a 1 gallon of Fluid film and a pneumatic sprayer and plan to apply it to the underside and all seems as soon as the pollen subsides. I'm sure the FF will cause some stuff to stick to the body but I can't think of any other way to handle it. I'm not concerned about the inside of the bed since after all it's a dump trailer. I notice that my last dump trailer(a PJ) seemed to have most rust issues on the underside anyways.

    As I said if I could do over, I'd order the standard paint so touch up is easier.

    It may not be the prettiest, but it has been effective. Wire brush to clean up the rust in the bed and spot areas, with a thick coat of black rustoleum. I used 1 gallon on a 6.5x12.

    I would visit my local Line-X dealer and have them coat the underside as well as the bed. You can't go wrong with Line-X and their lifetime guarantee.

    I have had 5 dump trailers and own 25 varying sizes of dump trucks the smallest being 4 F-550's. I have had many more over the years. I have never lined the interior with anything other than paint and bare once that wears off. My beds last 20 years or more without any rework as long as I clean them out regularly. Do not leave dirt in them.

    Lining the under side would probably be a good idea. This most likely is more important in the northern states. I do keep the outside of the beds touched up with paint at all times.

    This has been my experience with working machines as well. Whatever substance/ surface wore the paint off will keep the surface rust worn off as well. For areas that may just be lacking powdercoat, I'm not sure. Wouldn't want to do anything that might inadvertently seal moisture in. I'd probably run it for a year or two and then decide what to do when I saw how much of a problem would really develop. We don't have to deal with the rust issue down here quite like y'all do, though.

    I definitely do not want to line the inside, no different than the tri-axles we run at work, use keeps them shinny. my main concern was salt exposure to the underside. I've never been a fan of undercoating but thought the bed liner would not only seal, but wear and clean up better with the pressure washer... still open for any and all ideas, I want to wrap it up sometime this summer...

    I usually use paint. I had a powder coated gooseneck trailer and did all my touch up on it with paint. I would not have a problem doing that under a dump trailer to maintain it.

    Ditto on using paint to touch up areas. I've had good success doing that and the black is easy to match.

    For sealing the cracks check out 3M's Drip Check. I have found that it works better than rtv and can be painted. Just make sure the area is clean and dry before covering with anything or you won't be able to see the rust until it is too late.
