    Fair price for a 16’ trailer

    Curious - found a decent used 16’ trailer locally, but not sure on what a fair price is.

    Wood deck in good shape, trailer is a little rusted and will need new rubber within a year, but serviceable. Mesh ramp with no dovetail - 2 regular duty axles.

    I’m thinking a grand is a good price and thinking of offering that to see if it gets interest. Seller started at twice that, but doubt he got much interest as he has lowered price a few times.

    Pricing is of course variable by area, but I’d expect an economy grade 16’ to go around 2200-2600 new - so less than half for working/rough cosmetics feels right to me. Thoughts?

    In my area a 16', dual axle, 10,000# utility trailer in halfway decent shape that has paperwork runs ~$2,000 minimum.

    I've seen a few for slightly less than that but they are usually missing the decking or they have no title for it.

    For $1,000 you can find one that's missing an axle, has no decking, no paperwork and has been sitting in a swamp for the last 10 years.

    Yeah, $1000 won't buy you much around me either.
    I paid $2k for a Rice car hauler, 16' (14+2), with 1 brake axle, powder coated frame, and LED package, used with paper work.
    Most used car haulers around me will be $1800 +

    Does it have brakes on one or both axles? Do the brakes work? Do the lights work? Whats it rated it for weight? 7000 lbs is common. Does it have the battery break away kit on it? If it has brakes on at least one axle and the lights work, in my area they would be asking $1500 to $2000 if its in good shape.

    I can't see where you are from but I just sold a 16' enclosed trailer 7000# dual axle in good shape with no leaks and very little rust here in Florida for $1500.00 and I felt like I was robbing the guy. He must have been from up north because he didn't question the price when I told him.

    Dual 3500# axle with brakes

    No paperwork - do not believe it’s required by state as just below weight limit - but gotta be close. Honestly prefer it, even if it does cost $50 more - just easier to prove ownership and not worry about stolen stuff.

    On that note - anyone remember the link to check for stolen equipment- I know it exist, just cannot remember it in my old age. If not - I’ll find and post it back here for anyone interested.

    I personally was thinking anything sub $1500 was a “good” price - just checking my pricing. It’s a landscape trailer - no pull out ramps like a car hauler, and lighter duty rated axle so not good for hauling heavier equipment- but at least it has brakes. I think there’s a limited market locally for these - most people who need that big want a little heavier duty - otherwise you could get by with a 12’ and save a ton.

    A lot of people “ask” the moon for these things I know - and a lot of people are still sitting on them. There’s a huge variance in price and quality of trailers. A quality built name 18’ car hauler or equipment trailer is what - $4500 new...but the homemade variety or cheaper stuff is closer to 3. Quality wise this is not bad - but without a name attached - it’s just a nice homemade in my book.

    Will make the offer and see. Won’t hurt my feelings if they say no. Initially thought I needed a 48” tiller - and finding one uses in spring will be impossible reasonably priced - then thought why buy something I’ll use once or twice a year - get a trailer and increase my ability to use what I have anywhere year round.

    Condition of tires , brakes, wheel bearings and lights all come into play. It doesn’t take long to spend a thousand dollars fixing up a used trailer.

    I plan to purchase a trailer tomorrow. At a place that's local to me (Bedford, PA) they are advertising a new economy model from Quality Trailer (rebranded as Trailer Baron) 16' (14+2' dove) for $2200 new. 4" frame, 7k, brakes on one axle. I'm planning to buy the general duty model 18' for $2670 as i like the ramp storage, 5" frame, front header, and light protection a bit better. I crawled underneath both, they are fully painted, welds look nice from what i could see, and all have treated wood decks.

    Does your state require license plates ?? If so, you need a VIN(which means a title), or in some states can apply for a homemade trailer and stamp the trailer yourself after it has been inspected. Put a picture of it up if you can. Around here in MO, they are a dime a dozen. Take 10 $100 bills and go see the seller if it looks okay to you, lay it on the desk and see what happens.
