    New 2040 Owner

    Ok,

I have had my 2040 one week. Just got the technical manual in yesterday.

    A few questions.

1 The alternator on this 2040 is not hooked up at all. Could I switch to a one wire alternator to simplify things, or is changing from the original wiring a mistake.

2 I track down the loose steering to the steering arm and/or steering shaft(yoke). Where is a good place to buy these?

3 Should I stick with the original hydraulic fluid , or is there a more modern hydraulic fluid you would recommend?

4 Engine oil? John Deere only, or does any 30 weight work.

I worked on the tractor about 16 hours so far. Replaced all the dash wiring(a mouse had a field day), and cleaned layers of muck.

Still need to fix the steering, alternator, and maybe a little bit of stuff at the bell crank.

    Thanks,

    Jimmy

On the hydraulic fluid i would only use John Deere Hy-guard. Dont take a chance ruining the wet brakes. On engine oil use a good 15w-40, Rotella, Delvac, Delo or John Deere Plus 50 II.

Ditto on utilizing Hy-gard hyd oil. I've read Hy-gard has 5% wear additives compared to 1% in TSC Traveller Premium oil

I would keep the JD alternator. In the 24 years I've owned my 2030, it only was a problem once overcharging the battery (boiling out the water/acid). Turned out the voltage regulator had come unplugged . No idea how

I think if you'll check your 2030 doesn't have a JD alternator. More than likely your tractors alt is a Motorola or Robert Bosch. 2040 probably has a Bosch also.

OK a JD SUPPLIED alternator. I stand corrected.
