    Looking at 5045E tractors....

    Hey all...my Branson tractor deal fell through that I thought I was going to buy. She wants too much for it even know it's a brand new tractor essentially. So, I'm back looking for another Deere as I initially planned. Sold my X738 in September and bought a Gravely ZT for strictly mowing duty. I need a tractor for our acreage and eventually a chore tractor for having a few cows(hauling hay bales, rough area mowing). Also hauling a lot of cut-down trees and what not as I have a lot of cleaning up to do around the property. Also will be used to plow snow in our driveway and back to the shed that drifts a lot. I was initially looking at the 3038E's but the aluminum transmission case and just overall cheapness has steered me away from them. That and they are not that heavy and cannot lift that much as well. I would rather buy a bit bigger tractor than I need than have to upgrade a few years down the road. Not really a fan of the hydraulic transmission/4WD either. Would like a cab, but that extra $9k is not in the budget right now unfortunately. Anybody have one? What are the pros/cons and problems with them if any?

    As someone who nearly made the mistake of getting a 5045E, I will say - don't.

    The Only reason is that you get $2K worth of bigger rear tires for the $2k they charge going up to the 5055E. You want the bigger tires if for nothing more than the added volume for putting more fluid in them.

    Fuel economy won't even be discernable between the two. You're not saving anything getting the base tune on the engine.

    What are we being asked to compare....a 5045E compared to what? Why would buying one have been a mistake? Its a pretty basic tractor at a great price. Had one once and traded it in because I needed the trade in money but have been sorry every since.

    The 45's come with super skinny rear tires.

    I bought a 5065E instead, and couldn't be happier.

    How many cows? and are you planning on making your own hay in the future?

    For this 5 series tractor, I agree with the other guys go with the 55HP with the larger tires.

    I have the 5065E, Deere Loader, and Hay Fork. Tires are NOT weighted with water. On dry ground, in 2 wd, with a round bale on front, you can feel the rear tires lifting slightly. Anything on the rear for ballast helps, post hole digger, shredder etc.

    That being said, if you stick to the 4045 or 5055, deliviering bales will become a chore.

    "E" Series, purchasing used unit

    Also, If you considering ANY used "E" Series Tractor, look it over closely, particularly in the transmission top, hydraulic control quadrant, hydraulic valve area. Look for hydraulic oil dampness on parts, bolt heads that are missing paint from being taken off/on, etc.

    Tier III Series "E's" will have the exhaust pipe on the LEFT side of the hood , sitting in the seat. These had known SERIOUS Hydraulic problems. The unit you may be looking at either didn't have the problems (yet), may have had the problems, MAY have been fixed properly -- or maybe not. (See my posts from 2012 thru 2016. My 5065E had to be repaired 3 times over a 3 year period before DEERE and the dealer got it right)

    TIER IV Series will have the exhaust pipe on the RIGHT side of the hood. In addition to the above hydraulic issues, look for any rubber parts under the hood (fuel lines, belts, hoses, etc) showing excessive cracking from the intense heat caused by the TIER IV EPA equipment required. The high heat of the cat converter under the hood has no where to go. Hopefully, by the time the TIER IV units came out, John Deere gave a damn about fixing the hydraulic issues.

    What year? I sat on one at the state fair last year and it was just a tiny little bugger. Saw one at the dealer the other day and it was the same size as the rest of the 5E's.
