Picked up a 316 Onan today

A friend from seminary has been looking for a machine to take care of his one acre lot to replace his little slow Honda rider. I have been watching for something since the beginning of May and yesterday we were finally able to snag one for him - a 316 with a B series Onan. Serial number is 290318 and I am pretty sure it is a 1984 model. The seller said the carb needs rebuilt as it needs choke to run and it came with a 49 blower (needs a new cutting edge and some TLC, and a 41 deck. Oil looks good and the hydro is REALLY quiet and does not seem jerky. I am going to start by cleaning out the gas and replacing fuel line and the in-tank pickup. It will need a seat and I need to figure out how to move the seat so that he has more legroom (Paul is 6'4"). I will keep the 41 and the extra 48 I picked up in May will go on it for him.

So my parts list as of now is as follows:
    - carb rebuild kit if needed
    - tuneup parts
    - primary and secondary mower drive belts

That was my thought too. It has the typical paint wear on the fender pan but the pan itself is not all bent up and it still has both taillights in place. I'd say it has wear and tear from age but does not look abused. Belly screen is still in place but a bit dirty and will need the insulation on the firewall replaced. I have these items for my 318 repower that might get put on this one to get my friend up and going sooner than later.

I also found the quintessential yellow dealer band from Roeder Power Eqpt in Dubuque on the back of it. Got it near DeWitt, it is in Cedar Rapids for repairs, and will head back to Dubuque when I am done.

Also, I have an extra Command 18HP Twin that could go into this one if there is a problem with the Onan.

A good friend of mine had an excellent idea about the seat/leg room issue that I adapted to my 318.
Ill have to see if I have pics somewhere, but if not Ill go get some of my setup.

Basically, you take the stock seat springs, cut 2" or so (I can measure), then relocate the mounting holes on the fender deck.
On mine, (Im 6'), I cant believe how much better it is. You could probably do more, but you run into the fuel filler neck when the seat moved back on the springs.
You will also need an additional coil spring to absorb some weight since the others were cut short.

On the grommet replacement, replace ALL the fuel lines, pickups, etc. At its age, its going to need it sooner or later, and you are better off doing it before it starts getting used, then ends up stuck in the middle of the lawn because its not getting fuel due to a hose coming apart in the tank.
I created a thread on WFM detailing mine here: https://www.wfmachines.com/forums/sh...-at-all-speeds

You do need to be a member to view pictures, but the rest of the info is there if you arent. Probably a good idea to join, as they have a TON of info on there for the older Deere GTs.

A quick message to the owner of the tractor reminded me that he's much taller than me than I realized - he's 6'5" and I check in at 5'6"

Here are a few more pics of it. The dash is in really good condition and the steering wheel is not worn. No idea how many hours it has on it. Also included a pic of the 4wheeled 48 deck that will go with it.
