    212 issues

    I have a 212 manual pto that is giving me fits. It always seemed under powered snow blowing and mowing and would get bogged down in longer grass unless I had the deck all the way up. The other day the grass was 3in high and it quit mowing all together. The pto wouldn’t turn/engage. I parked it, went to show my dad what was going on and now the tractor won’t start.

    Is the governor functioning? Does yours have the split bracket PTO or the single piece bracket?

    Since this is a mechanical PTO, it uses belts and tension (springs) to engages the attachments. So I think you should start with the engine and see if the governor is functioning. If it is beyound you knowledge or skill level. I would highly recommend taking it to a shop either JD or someone who services all brands and types.

    where to start........there are many may possible causes. since it is happening on both the mower and snowblower we will assume it is tractor related, not the attachments.

    check the pto release and brake adjustment.

    run it at WOT with no load until up to temp, then shut it off without idling down and pull the plug, it should be tan to brown

    check that you are actually running at 3600 rpm

    those should be the easiest, before really digging in

    How do you check the RPMs? I've never done that on a small engine.

    I have both a tiny tach inductive tachometer, and a laser one.

    Harbor freight has a tach for about $35. A piece of tape (supplied) on the pulley, aim the tach at the tape, push the button...ya got an rpm readout on the display! Bob
