New here, John Deere 212 ... few questions

Hello everyone, new here to the forum !

My tractor I cut with and use is a 2012 x360 and I love it. I just recently picked up my first "vintage" Deere. It's a 212 and I bought it from the second owner who has used it to cut with for the last 17 years. 12hp Kohler was completely rebuilt 3 years ago and it runs like a swiss watch.

    My questions:
    1. what is the correct position to run the variator (spelling) lever in? It is currently all the way forward. I just do not want to burn anything up.

    2. It's an 82 (212), higher hours at 2200, however it was not only taken care of but fresh engine rebuild. Did I get a decent deal on it at $325 ?

    3. What is the T-handle for that is located on the front of the tractor just below the grill?

    4. Lastly, are parts pretty readily available for these models?

Thank you in advance everyone !

    Welcome from northeastern Pennsylvania.

First off, I'd say you stole it at $325.

The T-handle is to adjust tension on the mower drive belt.

Check your operator's manual and properly adjust the variable speed control. It works very well and makes ground speed change quick and easy.

Doesn't get much better than a 212 with a Kohler.

Thank you ! I unfortunately did not receive any manuals with it. I did download a pdf manual for the engine. Looking to find a snowblower for it to retire the 74 speedex 1040 I use to plow so I can restore it.

Also, this wire comes out from behind the engine cover. Only seems to reach to bottom post of the coil. Is it supposed to go to the bottom post ?

I think that is one of the stator wires. There should be two that go to a three wire plug (outside holes) and connect to the voltage regulator. Also check for the condensor on the coil, usually used on the negative for points run engines. So look for those.

Nice find! I am not an electrical guy so not sure about the wire you found but can answer regarding the variator. Think of it as a variable speed lever, that's what it is. I seem to remember reading somewhere not to run it in the full forward or back positions but never had a problem when doing so on my 1986 212. There are lots of videos on youtube for this machine including how to adjust the variator, which is very easy.

There are lots of snowblowers for these out there for sale. Try Craigslist, ebay, or Marketplace (on facebook) to satrt. Parts should be no problem to get - even at the stealership. Haven't found anything I couldn't buy yet.

A model 37A snowblower works great and I think there is a wider one that fits also. And don't get sticker shock when you find a pair of wheel weights, they usually cost more than the blower.
