    420 won't start

    Good afternoon all,

    I pulled my 420 out of the warehouse so that I could move stuff around for winter. At the end of the afternoon, we went to start it to move it back inside. The battery light comes on, you hear a click which appears to be coming froom the Time Control Module, but nothing else. If you turn on the PTO switch before trying to start the tractor, there is no click but the battery light comes on.

    I checked both the 10A and 30A fuses; they were good.

    The light circuit works.

    Any thoughts on possible sources of problem and fixes? Thanks

    Hiya,

    First 2 items I would look at, starter solenoid voltage when you turn the key to start, if it's not battery voltage, check the ignition switch, if it is battery voltage, check the solenoid/starter. Could also be a seat switch or the hydrostat control handle switch as well. I had a 330 that acted like it had all sorts of gremlins, a new ignition switch fixed it right up.

    Good advice Tom. I replaced a couple of ignition switches over the twenty some odd years I owned my 420.

    Same symptoms as well. Click, no start.

    The seat switch is not involved in starting. The pto switch and neutral switch are. If it’s new enough it also has a brake switch involved in the start circuit.

    The seat switch only becomes part of the current path to keep running if the pto is toggled on or the shifter moves out of neutral.

    My guess leans towards the pto switch, but the ignition is much cheaper to just throw at it.

    Regarding the neutral switch, when you pull the shift lever away from its neutral position, the switch appears to be working; when you engage the PTO switch, everything comes to a halt, no clicking in the TDM.

    I have ordered a new ignition switch. When I spoke with my son, he reminded me that we had been down this road before and changing the ignition switch took care of the problem.

    I will let you know how I make out later this week. Thanks to everyone for their input so far.

    I would also recommend adding the reliable start relay to your tractor. This reduces the draw of current the key switch must handle with the starter solenoid even further.

    I agree that it should be the first thing anyone with starting problems. That was the first thing that I did when I bought the tractor in 2000. I also had it on the 318 as well. With the Onan, I believe that it made a difference. Not so sure with the Honda.

    Aha!!!

    Looks like I solved my problem. After changing the ignition switch didn't do anything, actually it wouldn't anything at all. Nothinig at all. So when I pulled the switch and harness out from the depths of the console, I discovered the purrple(?) wire had stayed behind all by itself. When I plugged it back into the plug, the starter spun. It lookss like the wire may havee ben making intermittent contact last Saturday which was probably why I could get a clicking in the TDM. My son will finish putting it together tomorrow. It was pretty dark with only a shop light for illumination.

    After 30 years, I suppose things will slide out of position
