420 Rims

Morning Everybody.

I am completely new to JD items but just picked up a 420 in great condition. Love it so far.

I am after another set of rear rims and am wondering what all tractors from this time period shared the same rear rims? I am keeping my eyes out for guys parting out tractors but am unsure which ones have rims that are the same as the 420. I know it is a 12in rim and 5 bolt but unsure of the width and whether or not other tractors shared the same rim. Any input is helpful.

Any 400 series tractor from that era had the same rear rims. The 400, 420, and 430. The 400 was made from 1975-83, the 420 & 430 replaced it. The 430 has a Yanmar diesel in it and it is a little bit longer otherwise its about the same as a 420. The tire that goes on it is 26x12-12. I would search Ebay. Rims are generally not cheap. Several manufacturers offered basically a tractor identical to the 420,, such as Cub Cadet,,



Get a tape measure,, find out your measurements, then compare wheels you might find,,

Add your location to your name,, someone near you may even have a set,,

I have a set for the Cub Cadet in the pic above,,,

The rims for the 400 series are 12 x 10.5 wide. That measurement is from inside the bead rail to inside the other bead rail or the flat part of the inside of the rim.

The flat faced rims for the 400 series were made by a different manufacturer during a strike or something. Try to avoid those as they tend to crack around the bolt holes.

The 300 series generally measure around 8.5 inches, that seems to change a little by year or manufacturer.

JD started the 420 series using the 12 x 10.5 rims and later dropped back to a 9.5 rim, both using the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. Some of the JD 425 series had the larger 12 x 9.5 rims and all of the 445 and 455 series did. This kind of opens up the market a little. Although other manufactures such as Cub Cadet used 12 x 10.5 rims the offset is different. The backside offset is less than JD's. They would work, however they would stick out more than the JD rims do. Here is a link to Xtreme Motorworks that carries a large selection of new 12 x 10.5 rims with several choices of offset. Mine must have had a rearend change.

Rear wheel weights between the the 400 and the 4x0 are different. The 400s are flat on the inside and don't really fit on the 4x0 without drilling a big hole in the center. Did that to a pair once. Not fun.

All great info. Thanks a ton guys. I am not in any rush so I am hoping to stumble on somebody parting out an old machine close to me and get a set for cheap.

The wheels are 400 only too? Wow. I have a 400 and didn't know that. Thanks for sharing. I know the Rear PTO is different, 840 RPM vs the 2000 rpm. The decks are different than the 420, the front quick hitch mount is different, different engines of course.

I always thought the rims were the same between all three of the 400 models. What would posses JD to be that specific on their models?
The 400 is truly a black sheep then.
