    I Will Eventually Get It Right---Fixed That Is

    Here is my agony problem.

    I have a Z710A that I have upgraded with Volt gauge and Oil Pressure gauge. The Ztrak runs with a Kohler 23 hp V-Twin. I had no problem installing the Faria brand Volt gauge and the wiring set-up. Not with the Faria oil pressure gauge situation, as I have tried three 0-80 PSI sending units to no avail.
    Here is how I have the oil pressure gauge wired-up.
    1. Hot (red 16 gage wire) to the 12 volt "hot" wire when the key is in the "on" position to the "I" (ignition) post on the gauge.
    2. Ground (black 16 gage wire) from the black ground cable on the engine block to the "G" post on the gauge.
    3. Sendor unit (dk.blue 16 gage wire) from the sending unit to the "S" post on the gauge.

    NOTE: When I first installed the gauge the gauge read about 55 PSI for about one hour of mowing, and the gauge needle fluttered and went to "zero". I re-checked my wiring to make sure all was tight and blight. So, I removed the sending unit and installed a new one. Now, when I turn the key on to "Start" the tractor, the gauge reads "zero" and sometimes the needle may read about 35 PSI and fall back to zero on the gauge.

    I ordered a new Faria 0-80 PSI gauge and installed it. I get the same reaction on the new gauge and nothing else.. I've re-checked all the wiring and all tests out good.

    To install a Oil Pressure gauge and sending unit, I had to installed a "sandwich adapter" between the engine flange and the oil filter. It is aluminum material and seems to be very high quality product. I don't think that is the problem. I think my problem may be the "grounding" of the sending switch that the gauge is connected to and not getting good ground.

    Anyone have a better idea if they have this set-up on their John Deere Ztract mower.

    I said I would eventually get it right...or fix it.

    I located a different sending unit..one that has to posts....signal and ground. I now have it working...However, I get only 35 psi of oil pressure showing on the gauge at idle and maybe 3 more psi at full throttle on the 23 hp Kohler engine. I had hoped this Kohler would at least have 50-60 psi.. Reason I say that is, I have a John Deere 345 with a 20 hp Kawasaki and have the same Faria 0-80 psi gauge and sending unit and I get 60 psi at start-up and it comes down to 50 psi when hot.

    What should I be looking for in way of PSI on this 23 hp Kohler?

    Have you tried looking at the service manual? It might state the specs. I could guess at what engine you have but the only data I have is that it is a 23HP and most likely a vertical shaft. With this I narrowed it down to one of 6 engines. Unless it is really a 23.5 or 22.5 rated engine then the number of possibilities probably goes up. If you looked at the data plate on the engine it should have the actual model number from Kohler and you can get the manual direct from them.

    Just noticed you also posted what model John Deere you have. Based on this site you have a Kohler CV680.

    Specifications

    Here is a link to the Kohler service manual based on this information. Might come in handy at some point.

    I didn't read the entire manual but I did see on page 145 where it was talking about Oil Pressure needing to be 20PSI or higher.

    The Z710A does have a Kohler CV680 series. The mower has 335 hours.

    I would think 20 psi would be a very poor oil pressure for this 23 hp engine. More like 40 psi would be about normal.

    20 PSI is the minimum spec. I did also see that there was an oil pressure regulator that prevents the pressure from being too high but it didn't really say what the setting was for that.

    I wouldn't be worried about 35 psi at all, that's what I would expect from an implement engine like these.

    Let's face it, 23-25 horsepower from a 750cc engine like many of these Kohlers and Kawasakis are, is extremely "low performance" compared to something like a motorcycle engine of equal size that's producing over 100 hp.

    I have Photobucket. That is I once had Photobucket. It has become such a pain to get any photos to upload and when they will, I can no longer copy any to any forum...without a payment to them.

    You could save the pictures onto your device and then upload them to your post.
