    ZTR Dual Fuel Tanks Question

    I do not own a JD ZTR but wanted to ask here.

    I assume there are JD ZTR's that have dual tanks, my question is are they manually switched between the 2?


    I have a Husqvarna PZT60 and it has dual tanks, I was planning to get rid of the petcok in the middle and place a T, then place a on/off Petcock after the T.

    I ask because this seems so small of a thing I wonder is there a technical reason they don't do this or an OSHA/Safety reason??

    The older model kubota diesel had the two tanks with a valve. Now they are tied together with a piece of pipe on the top. Don't know how it works though.

    It would appear that Husqvarna is trying to out-do the competition with a large fuel capacity---two tanks to impress their owners or future buyers with these two tanks for fuel.
    I have a JD Z710A with a 7 gal. tank---one tank and I can mow 5-1/2 hours or 7 acres on this 7 gals. and still have some fuel in the tank.
    I don't need to mow for 8 hours setting on a tractor seat, unless you are getting paid by the job ..contract.

    With the two tanks setup and having to switch tanks sometime during your mowing, isn't all that difficult or troublesome. If you try to modify the switch over, you may run into some vacuum problems

    Good idea. Think of it as always having a good reserve. I just didn’t understand why it is difficult to turn a switch or valve.

    And didn’t the dealer recommend you not tie the tanks together (in another thread)?

    As far as I know, going back to 2002, most if not all the commercial units had switched tanks, our 2002 Toro ZMaster had it.
    I tried to always run both tanks down at pretty much the same rate mainly because of traction issues on side hills.

    Some of the old H-D fuel tanks were 2 pieces. Like left and right side.
    They had 2- 1/4" hoses connections. One at the top and one at the bottom. With the tanks paralleled the fuel drains out evenly. They each had a fuel cap for filling. You could fill both from right side. However it would take forever. 2.5 gallons through a 1/4" hose.
    2014 X540 with HDAP tires, 54" deck, brush guard, arm rests and cargo bag.
    JD 48" plow with angle from seat kit & heavy duty skid shoes.
    4 suitcase weights and chains.
    JD tow behind spreader.
    JD 42" lawn sweeper.
    JD 10P cart.
    JD JS61 RWD walk behind mower.
    Stihl KM110 power head with pole saw, shaft extension, power scythe, curved shaft edger, 2 straight shaft cutters (string & blade).
    Stihl MS180-CBE 16" saw.
    Stihl SH86C hand held blower vac.

    I had a friend with a tow truck with dual tanks plumbed together with a 1" line across the bottom of the two tanks. He ran out of fuel when he got stuck in a ditch. He had a 1/4 tank showing on the gauge before going into the ditch, after being stuck there for awhile the engine quite(fual starvation) even thought the gauge now showed 1/2. All the fuel ran out of the driver's side tank into the lower, passenger side tank, the engine pulled off the driver's side tank. I brought him 60L of fuel(3 cans) and put it in the driver's tank. Primed the fuel system and it ran for 5min and died again. All the new fuel ran over as well. Now the gauge showed full and fuel was dribbling out the vent. Went and got another 3 cans of fuel and put it into the driver's tank. Primed system and finally it stayed running long enough to pull him out. The whole time it was during a snowstorm. Not nice.

    If your system is currently separated I'd leave it that way. My old F932 had separated dual tanks, I'd run one tank down to just a hair about empty then switch over to the 2nd tank and run that one right dry. Then switch back to the first tank and use that fuel to driver out of the field so I'd never run out in the field.
