Serial number breaks, 7 Iron deck question

Do 7 Iron decks have their own serial numbers?
Would the serial number breaks in this pic be for a deck serial number, or the machines number?

Those are deck serial numbers. They have their own serial numbers that are distinct from the machine they are mounted on. They'd have a difficult time using machine serial numbers since the decks are used on multiple machine models.

I get what you're saying and i was thinking that too maybe. But machines have model numbers so really that wouldn't be too difficult. (X model machine has, X part # 7 iron deck, until X serial number). Not saying you're wrong because I don't know, but I can't really find anything about them being serialized. The other thing that threw me off, was that both the 60", and 72" have serial breaks at the same numbers.

Reason I'm asking is i'm looking at parts, and some part #'s have changed and or been superseded, but those part #'s fit some newer 7 Iron decks too. But the parts illustrations show differences in shape and fitment. I know I shouldn't lean on that as gospel but it makes me wonder.

They could do that but it presents it's own problem. Tractors are assigned serial numbers as they are built. Deere doesn't know if you're going to order any mower for it at all when they build the tractor.

You actually are close but you have it backwards. The tractor's serial number tells you nothing about any implements. But the mower deck's serial number tells you which tractors it fits.

Not saying you're wrong because I don't know, but I can't really find anything about them being serialized.
You could look at any Deere mower deck and it would have a serial number tag on it. I'm not sure what more it would take than that. If you do a Google search on "Deere 7-iron deck for sale" you'll find tons of them and most of them have the serial number of the deck up for sale included in the listing.

The other thing that threw me off, was that both the 60", and 72" have serial breaks at the same numbers.

Keep in mind that "7 iron" isn't a model. It simply means that the deck was stamped from 7-gauge steel. So it's thicker steel than decks that aren't 7-iron decks. But there are LOTS of 7-iron decks There are 7-iron decks for the X500, X700, SCUTs, CUTs, Z-turns, Commercial walk behind mowers, etc... and each one of them has a unique model number of it's own. (Deere does the same sort of thing with the mower decks on smaller machines. They are labeled as "Edge" decks but there are several different "Edge" mower decks. They aren't all interchangeable)

If you found a deck with a model M04172X012345, that would tell you that it is a mower deck for the 41XX-series compact tractors and is 72". A TC72FLX012345 would be a 72" 7-iron flex deck for the 1400 & 1500 series front mount mowers.

If you have a Deere mower deck, it has a serial number plate on it with it's model and serial number. Those are what you need when looking for parts.

Right on, good info thank you. Never noticed the serial plate before, but then I guess I never looked for it until now.
Searching for criteria regarding the serialized 7 iron decks didn't turn up much. You are right tho, that looking through for sale listing shows serial plates on the decks. for instance searching "7 Iron" on tractorhouse.

    Thanks

I don't know where all this is going to end up, but, for now here is the facts on the serial number issue for the 7 Iron mower decks. I know of four friends/neighbors that have John Deere Commercial Z Traks with 7 Iron decks, and not one of them have a mower deck with a serial number decal(s). And that goes for my JD Z710A with a 7 Iron 54" deck.
So, where does this individual )member) here states that all 7 Irons decks have a different serial number based on the Tractor Model?
From what I can find and have ask the sales people at the J D dealer, all 7 Iron decks based on their deck size will fit and hook-up to any Z Trak model from Z700, Z800, and Z900 series.

Show me where this isn't true.

How old are your ZTraks? Perhaps Deere has done something different with them as of recent?

So obviously, not all 7-iron decks will fit the ZTraks.

And here's a 54" Ztrak deck with a pic of the serial number tag:
Used John Deere 54 ZTrak 7-Iron Front Commercial Deck Fits F680 | eBay

Is that one an oddity? I don't think so. If you use JDParts and look up PC2631 it brings up a listing of the mower decks for the 48-Inch, 54-Inch and 60-Inch Mower Decks for F620,F680 and F687 ZTrak Mowers.

That has a document that breaks down the 7-iron decks by serial number and year:

    2000 Model (Serial No. TC48ZTA015001-020000)

    2004 Model (Serial No. TC48ZTA050001-060000)

    2006 Model (Serial No. TC48ZTA070001- )

    54-inch Front-Mount Mower Deck ("7-Iron" Commercial)
    2000 Model (Serial No. TC54ZTA015001-020000)
    2001 Model (Serial No. TC54ZTA020001-030000)

    2004 Model (Serial No. TC54ZTA050001-060000)
    2005 Model (Serial No. TC54ZTA060001-070000)
    2006 Model (Serial No. TC54ZTA070001- )

    60-inch Front-Mount Mower Deck ("7-Iron" Commercial)
    2000 Model (Serial No. TC60ZTA015001-020000)
    2001 Model (Serial No. TC60ZTA020001-030000)
    2002 Model (Serial No. TC60ZTA030001-040000)
    2003 Model (Serial No. TC60ZTA040001-050000)
    2004 Model (Serial No. TC60ZTA050001-060000)
    2005 Model (Serial No. TC60ZTA060001-070000)
    2006 Model (Serial No. TC60ZTA070001- )

So Deere seems to think they have serial numbers.

Looking at JDParts, it appears that with the current Ztraks Deere has changed their system with Ztraks so that they are built and serial numbered with a specific deck size. I have no way of verifying that the current Ztrak decks don't have serial numbers so I'll have to take your word for it. But that makes them the exception to the rule.

This John Deere forum is based on Zero Turn mowers, not front wheel steering models.

My Z710A is a 2013 year and the 54" deck doesn't have a serial. There are only two serial numbers on the tractor...One for the engine, and the other for the tractor. Although, the tractor serial number does show the tractor is equipped with a 54" deck in the decal.

My old 1999 JD 345 does have a serial number on the 54" mower deck.

I would tend to agree. What 7 Iron deck are you talking about?

They make a 7 Iron deck for tractors and they make them for Zero Turns. Since this is in the ZTR section of the forum, I would assume we are talking ZTR.

For my Z950R, I have the warranty print out so I looked at it. This report shows the SN for not only the machine but all kinds of different parts. The transmissions, ROPS, Fuel tank, Engine, Power module but no mower deck. It does list the deck, seat and tires in the option codes but only a part number is listed not a SN. I do not recall seeing any data plate on the mower deck with a SN.

Now if we are talking a tractor, that is a different story. There is no way you could take a deck off a ZTR and put it on say a 1 series. They are both 7 Iron Decks but they are very different. It would totally make sense that in the tractor side that they SN the decks because lots of people own tractors but not a mower deck. It is considered a separate implement that like any other attachment gets put on the machine, taken off, split up from packages, sold and resold an mounted on a different machine. That simply isn't the case with a ZTR. Take the mower deck off and it isn't good for anything but an expensive go cart.

Those front steering tractors don't share mower decks like the ZTR ones.
When I bought my Z710A, it had a 60" deck under it and I didn't want the larger deck. The salesman said that wouldn't be a problem, as they had a few 54" decks they had removed from other ZTRs. And best things happen...no fee involved in the switch. A couple years later I got the idea to buy a 60" deck so I could mow the rear lawn...which is 7 acres in size and figured I could mow it quicker., but, the $1.400.00 cost killed that idea.
