After my 1023e has not been operated for a extended period of time it takes about 3-4 seconds for the oil pressure warning light to go out on start up, and the engine does 'rattle' letting me know that it is thirsty for oil. That being said if the machine is used daily or every other day it seems to be fine, is this considered normal? Does the engine oil filter have anti drain back? I'm using 5w40 Rotella. .

The concern about start up engine wear is why I run Prolong in all of my engines. Also it can be run in the hydro oil to help with the same issues.

The rattle is not because of the oil pressure. It's because the engine is a diesal and that's the sound of small diesal engines at low rpm..

I agree, but I would feel that an engine knocking (piston slap, wrist pins, etc.), would have given up by now. If it's not low rpm rattle then it's time to see the dealer.

I'm aware of the normal diesel engine sound. The 'rattle ' on start up ends as soon as the low oil pressure light goes out. The engine then sounds normal. It's like the first start up after an oil change, you know by the sound the engine makes that the oil pressure came up.

I could just be injector knock until the engine comes up to speed, which would also turn off the oil light as the pressure builds. Unless it's blatantly loud and obnoxious, it's probably OK.

I'd go to 0w40 or 0w30. For sure, these will allow your oil pump to "grab" the oil immediately and get it pressurized. I once had a VW Cabrio with hydraulic valve lifters. Apparently one or more of them would drain down. The ONLY oil that would prevent the hydraulic tappets from hammering was 0w30. Even a 5w30 would not stop it. Wish I'd discovered 0w20 back then. Would have been even better.

I would think it has an anti drain back valve, so it may be worthwhile to replace the filter in case it's not working. Then switch to 0-40 synthetic like RalphVa says.

4 seconds sounds too long before the light goes out, it's not hydraulic lifters because these engines don't have hydraulic lifters, they are adjusted manually.
My 1025 has 15w-40 in it and it never takes more than a second for the oil light to go out.

I run 5w40 Rotella and I’m not seeing it any longer than usual either. Truth be told if Deere manual states it’s safe to use other grade level and it’s base on demographics (temperatures) location it shouldn’t caused no issue unless something else is off. I would recommend calling the dealer and ask if it’s normal and if it’s a major concern to you, and the tractor is still under warranty, I would get the dealer to check it out. Otherwise maybe someone with better experience will chime in.

The manual says 2 things about oil engine oil level, 1) don't run the engine if the oil level is below the fill mark. 2) don't run the engine if the oil level is above the full mark. If oil level is above the full mark, drain some oil to bring the level between the full and low marks. Evidently you can do damage with too much oil. So how is your oil level, is it too high? Both cases could turn the light on.

I have to ask who manufactures the oil filter you are using . Good oil filters are designed with a valve in them to prevent the oil from draining back into the engine oil pan. If you are using an off brand filter, or maybe a filter that is cheaply made without the back flow preventer, this may be your problem. I timed my startup yesterday and my oil light goes off in two (2) seconds. However that doesn't eliminate the "normal" diesal rattle. Time to change your oil and move to an OEM filter.

A follow up to my oil pressure on start up. I changed the oil and filter went to 15w 40 rotella syn ( had 5w 40 rotella syn.) and as mentioned a new JD oil filter as was on the machine before. I started the tractor to bring pressure up and check for leaks parked it back in the garage and left the tractor sit for 6 days to replicate the issue. I started the tractor and the oil pressure light flashed maybe two times in a second and went out and there was no engine noise (needing oil) as I described before. There is no smoking gun but I believe that the 'anti drain back valve' may have been faulty allowing oil to drain back out of the filter to the oil pan, just my opinion.
