1025r and 54D and Mid-PTO

Hey everyone, been some time since I have been here. Well that's not 100% true I come here often and quickly find answers but I don't often come to ask a question, today I have one. I have had my 1025 since 2014 and it's been a good tractor, only 240 hours on it right now. The thorn however is the Auto-Connect deck and specifically the mid PTO connect part. IMHO the older version of this part is poorly designed and downright cheap bars and not strong enough to handle the mounting and joining process unless everything is just perfectly aligned. Well, last two years mine has been near impossible to successfully join. I got underneath and found that the left to right bar that ends with the stubs that latch into the draft bars is snapped of on one side. That part is no longer made and not available anywhere. The replacement solution is a totally new system which looks far more robust but it's not cheap.

So after all that here is the question - Has anyone ever converted this auto PTO connect to a manual PTO connect, my dealer tells me it's totally possible but are there any issues or downsides to going this way. I think I can deal with a manual PTO solution as I only take the deck off once or twice thru the summer and it's off all winter (snow). Thoughts very welcome....

Hi Richard
I have a 2014 1025R with a 54D MMM I had exactly the same problem and as you say the parts to convert it to the later style are expensive. So I did the conversion my self the material cost less than $10.00 and consisted of a piece of 3/4"shaft and a piece of flat bar. Before I started I layed the assembly out on a piece of ply wood and traced around it to make shore when complete it was the same, taking particular care to mark the position of the piece of flat bar that positions the PTO quick connect and the adjusting bolt goes against. Now grind the welds off the pieces of 3/4" tube on both the swing arms and knock them out of the swing arms, this will leave 3/4' hole after cutting the shaft to length lay the assembly out on the ply wood you traced the swing arm out on and tack weld the swing arms to the shaft on the inside, away from where the mower connects to ( DO NOT weld on the out side as the weld will fowl on the mower hooks). Test fit the assembly to the tractor adjust if needed and fully weld on the in side, now fit the piece of flat, it must be in the same position as before or the PTO will not align.
You will need to purchase a set of side plates that that hold the PTO quick connect onto the 3/4" shaft. You can file the old side plates to suite but the hole centers MUST remain the same ( not an easy job) or the PTO will not fit properly.
Pictured below is the broken shaft, as I said the the whole job cost me about $10 and my time, it has been working fine for a couple of years. I took delivery of my 1025R in January 2015, it has over 700 hrs on it.

No conversion for me. I have a 2017

But my uncles is a 2014 and have been in the EXACT same predicament with his 60d. 2 years of tough on off and then same spot broke and he did replace it but the shaft refuses to line up still after reinstalled. I'm mowing with my new ztrak and not sure his affirmative plans for fixing his. But apparently this was under built or built to fail. I'm happy to be selling my 60d and no longer using it to mow. I have grown to dislike the system.

Hi PickupMan
You are right, getting the pto to align correctly took a bit of work the side ways alignment was the problem, if you get the correct new side plates for the PTO quick connect then that alignment will be correct. The original system was built to fail. It was designed to allow the deck to follow the ground contours side to side where the newer system does not, it's just the shaft couldn't flex enough ( bad design)

Not sure how but I just saw this response. Thanks for the info and reassurance sir. Appreciate it. Happy to say my deck is leaving as I have a z730m in my fleet now. I feel richer than I am having a dedicated mower but my uncle hasn’t moved on more repair work for his Johnny and now I’m mowing dads so I “justified the z”

Property 1
Johnny 2.8 hours
Ztrack 1.1 hours

Property 2
Johnny 2.4hours
Ztrack .9 hours

Property 1
Johnny 2.6 hours
Ztrack 1.8hours

Will follow up if my uncles gets more work. Probably won’t since he can cheaply pay me to handle it with the new addition.
