Looking at my 54D mower deck off the tractor I was wondering what to do with the female coupling under the tractor when the drive shaft is disconnected. Does anyone plug that open PTO spline to keep dirt out?

I never did... Didn't have any issues either.

It occured to me simply because it has the potential to be one of the highest friction points on the entire tractor. Just about every other friction point has a grease fitting or requires spray lube... Seems odd to me to invite any kind of dirt or dust right into a "spline" when we usually pump them full of grease and also boot them on some applications.

I just lock the lift arms up when the mmm is off. So far this has worked for me. For the most part my 1026 stays on the lawn and I dont see the underside geting in harms way.

If your worried about the pto/lift arms just take it off the tractor. Its not hard to do, no tools needed. I take mine off to put the pto shaft on for the snowblower.
