1026R demoted to lawn tractor status?

Was browsing through the owners manual for 1026R and 1023E with S/N 210000 and up. I was looking for the exiting new features for this years production. I didn't get to read all of it, I was jumping back and forth with last years manual. There is a nice section after starting the engine regarding the operation of RIO!

Edit: Reverse Implement Option

Are you saying the 1026R does have RIO?
'11 no, '12 maybe? Can someone confirm or deny?
Please expain RIO for us slow older folks. I can make a guess but would rather not.
It's where if you are mowing and put the tractor in reverse the mower will shut down. They can do this now that the PTO is electrically controller.

Neither of my PTOs shut down in reverse. I've used both the 60D and a brush cutter without issue in both directions.
RIO - Reverse Implement Operation

Gents,

On my previous John Deere X304 I had a RIO switch; as do all new JD garden tractors. That feature is one that allows the operator to pull up on a safety override switch to continue to operate the electrically controlled PTO for the mower deck while reversing. When You stopped, pulled up on the RIO, reversed the tractor and the mower would continue to operate. As soon as you take reverse power off the hydrostatic tranny or stop, the RIO would resume normal operation and kill the mower PTO the next time you reversed. Its a home owner safety feature.

I would be highly surprised if a Compact Utility Tractor or a Sub-Compact Utility Tractor would have this added a year after model release. The 1026R has two PTOs, and this RIO would interfere with both. Given the intended purpose of a utility tractor, operation of the PTO would cause grief for rear snow blowers for sure, so I don't think its anything to worry about.

The owners manual for (OMLVU24604; Issue D1; Compact Utility Tractors; 1023E PIN (010001-); 1026R PIN (010001-) is located at:

I searched it and cannot find any reference to RIO. Where did you see it exactly?

1026 will not shut pto off when u go from forward to reverse. I am so glad as it was annoying when i mowed with my x595 having to pull lever everytime you went in reverse.
I knew it would happen. I can't link the operating manual. You may be able find it at Deere.com under the product support area.

I can confirm that this DOES NOT happen on my 1026R's. Thank goodness!
Skier is correct.

And here is his proof. This manual is full of RIO references.

Though upon further review it is the European version he is talking about.

Easy Skier your getting people excited.

I only got to mow with it once. But , I am sure my 1026r does mow in reverse.
Randy, this is the part number for the euro manual. It is unreadable by me in the us.

Hopefully for potential '12 1000 series customers this section will be similar to the "not designed for off seat PTO use" discussion. As some of remember that there is a disconnect between what is written, and actual field operation.
Thank God it doesn't have the RIO. My LT180 had that and while you adjust, it clearly was not my preference. Just took delivery of the 1026R last weekend and other than a bit of playing around driving on and off the deck a few times (and I reved the engine to the PTO speed then engaged the MMM.....OMG!) I spent most of my time with the loader, front blade and just getting to know her.

Please don't do it that way! Pull the PTO on when the engine is at idle, then raise the RPM's.
RIO's are for the laywers:thumbsdown:
yes...its hard on the electric c lutch on most mowers to engage/disengage at anything above half throttle...preferably less

Thanks, never stop learning.
The X540 will only successfully engage the mower if the engine is at full rpm. :cray:

What will happen? Stall the engine?
I agree with Kenny. RIOs are for lawyers. Let them mow their yards with it. If my R came with that I would've bypassed it electrically in a heartbeat. Might have even been a deal killer. I'm all for safety, just not stupidity. It has to pass the common sense rule.

Now, back to my lawn tractor...wait a minute...no, it's deffinetly a utility tractor. I've already done too much real work with it to demote it to lawn mower status. :thumbup1gif:
