Hi all first post. Have been helping a neighbor get his families 1953 John Deere model 40 running. Now runs well but steering is almost seized up. Have read that bad worm gear,plate studs could be the problem. Have removed the steering worm gear, disconnected tie rods from steering pedestal. All that remains is the vertical shaft with plate and studs, and what the parts manual calls the upper spindle at (the bottom). With everything else disconnected it should rotate easily but it does not, still seized. Neighbor did mention in the past someone may have struck a post or tree with a front wheel. It does have a wide front end. Guessing this caused the problem. If so, parts manual does not make clear to me how to remove the vertical shaft or the upper spindle or what holds them in place. There was gear oil in the top with worm gear. Also found where oil is in the steering gear support. It also had gear lube in it. Is there some place I missed? Once worm gear was removed I did put a tire iron under the stud plate to see if I could move the vertical shaft but it was rock solid. For full disclosure I have posted this problem in two other forums. They were kind and wished me luck, but could not help me solve the steering problem. Hoping someone here can help. Once the steering issue is resolved this will be a nice usable tractor.

I would disconnect the tie rods and see if the spindles are the problem or if its in the steering/front end support. I have run into quit a few tractors that the spindles were the problem.

Tie rods have been disconnected. Spindle movement normal. Problem is in the steering gear support . At this point problem indicates parts that could be faulty are, steering vertical shaft, upper spindle, and it looks like a coupler. But like I initially said. Not able to see from the parts diagram, how it comes apart.

I'm not really familiar with the M / 40 series tractors, but this may help... I remembered seeing this a while back while looking up something for the neighbors powertrol on his 630.

Sorry but no, wish it were that simple. Problem is inside steering gear support. The housing beneath where she is working.

do u mean the tube? i think all that is in there -is a bushing as she said---that shaft goes down thru the tube--and then a yoke that turns the tie rods if i'm correct.:dunno:

I think what your calling the tube is two pieces bolted together. The parts catalog calls them the Support Steering Gear and the Support Front End. Inside those two pieces is where my problem is. Inside the tube reside three steering components that I believe are my problem. The vertical shaft with studs, coupler, and upper spindle. I can't see how to remove them or remove the pin that may hold them together.

What model 40 is this tractor? Also could use the serial # to help ID which front end it has. I assume from your description that it must be a standard or a utility. We have a 40 Tricycle which is a different front end.

It is a model 40 standard with a wide front end. John Deere Parts Catalog for 40 series Tractor, PC862. Page 50-5, key#5 shows vertical shaft. Page 55-4, key#32 shows spindle upper. It also shows key#6 coupler. Could be that pin #7 holds it all together. These are the only connected components left in the steering assembly. The vertical shaft and upper spindle seem to be fairly robust. If hitting a front wheel into an immovable object caused the problem I suspect the coupler and pin would be the weak link and could be twisted and bent causing the steering to seize. Those are the pieces I am unsure how to access and remove. Also am guessing once pin is removed the vertical shaft can be removed from the top and once wheel assembly removed upper spindle removed from the bottom. Just don't see how to get to that PIN.

Also sorry!! do not have serial# at this time. Hoping parts catalog# and identifying parts gives you everything you need. If not I'll go to where it's parked and get serial#.

Hello,

I don't recall there being any pins or couplings on the vertical shaft for that model. It might be seized tight in the lower bushing in the front end support. Put the nozzle of your favorite penetrating oil through the manual crank hole in the front end support and angle it to the left to soak the shaft. Hopefully it will get down to the seal and some will weep through.

If you have the steering arm off, use some pieces of hardwood or aluminum as spacers between the thread on the bottom of the shaft and the axle pivot tube and drive in an air chisel or steel wedge of some type to force the shaft up. Make sure the steel wedge doesn't hit the thread on the steering shaft.

There is a seal on the bottom too. Maybe you can pry it out and soak that area as well.

Ha... don't worry i've the skill to steer myself wrong about every chance I get. I did come in contact with a gentleman that had a T.I. manual. Looks like this front end does have a vertical shaft and upper spindle with coupler and pin. Should come apart pretty much as I had thought. Have been waiting for the temps to come down but we are still in the 90's. Hope to get to it the next couple of weeks. Will report progress and any surprises. But will first try squirting some oil as you suggest through the manual crank slot. Unable to find any evidence of a serial# plate. Had found it should be on LH side middle of frame near clutch bell housing. No plate, stamped numbers, molding, nothing.
