I have a 1998 John Deere 425 AWS lawntractor. It leaks hyd. fluid from the rear end. The leak is on the left side of the transmission towards the back. Can anyone tell me what to look for. Should I remove it from the tractor or can I fix it in place? Thanks

If you are lucky it is the seal around the differential lock. Otherwise it’s going to be a gasket for the case. I just did the diff lock and front case seal on a 445 this spring. and it wasn’t that bad a job you just got to be very careful taking it apart.

For the case I had to take it out and I am not sure for the differential if I would’ve had to take it out or not but removing it is not a bad job.

Pressure washer and baby powder are your friend. If it's the diff lock, you can unbolt the rear dif on the left side and raise it far enough to change it.
