Hello everyone, new guy and 1st post and in need of help. I just purchased a 2000 2x4 gator at a very good price because the left rear hub axle and sleeve were stripped out. The axle shaft coming out of the trans looks great on both sides. I'm assuming the previous owner had the differential locked in all the time or on concrete.... So for a quick fix just to see how it runs before I put money into it I switched the right hub (good one) over to the side that was stripped out. I had it jacked up and put in gear and you could hold the tire in place with little effort while it was in forward or reverse, unless the differential was locked in then it would turn like normal. I checked the obvious.. linkage, oil level in trans and everything looked good. So being a natural take apart and fix it guy I pulled the trans to have a look. To my surprise everything looked really good besides the smaller gear that the chain hooks to had a little wear on the teeth that the shift collar slides over. But the trans shifted fine and that doesn't go with my man drive axle problem I don't think. I have not taken apart the differential gear assembly but as far as I can tell it looks fine as well... Anyone have any ideal of what could cause this issue? Or can point me to what to look for in the differential assembly that could cause this? Really wanting to get this gator up to par and drive without having to lock in the differential because I will never use it anyway. Thanks in advance and look forward to finding out the problem. If I'm unclear please let me know and I will try to explain this issue better.

I tore down the transmission in my 4x2 a few years ago, there's a thread with some photos here.

I want to make sure I understand your problem. The outboard axle and sleeve on one side was damaged, so to test it you put the parts from the good side on the damaged side, so now you have the transmission with one final drive assembly on and just the stub shaft sticking out of the trans on the opposite side. Correct?

Now with the final drive assembly on one side and nothing on the other, you can turn the input shaft/ pulley on the trans and hold the wheel still unless the differential is locked. When you're testing it, have you watched the opposite side where just the transmission stub shaft is? If you're holding one wheel still, check to see if the opposite side is turning with the differential unlocked. If it is, that's normal operation. The diff sends the power to the wheel with the least resistance.

Thanks for the quick reply and info. And that is a yes, I can hold that wheel by just resting my hand on it and the other shaft does turn as far as I can tell.

So there isn't a main drive side? It just pulls on the side with the least resistance when you dont have the differential locked in?

So if the drive is stripped out on one side and just the wheel is there the machine isn't gonna move because the machine is trying to pull from the least resistant side (in this case the one that ISN'T hooked up) is that correct? I feel like an idiot..lol So I should be able to buy a new shaft for the hub and sleeve and should be good to go?

Correct. This is why when you get a 2wd truck, tractor, whatever stuck with one wheel on solid ground and one wheel in the mud, the one in the mud just spins and the one on solid ground doesn't pull.

Well im glad I asked! Thank you for helping me understand. It all makes sense. Ill replace the seals and seal it back up, then get what I need in that list and its golden! I learn something new everyday just wish I would have found this site before I took it apart lol. Well I know what's inside and understand how a differential works now. Thanks for the welcome! Glad to be a part of the forumn. Got the transmission sealed up today and installed, went ahead and replaced all the seals while I had it apart. Going to wait till tomorrow to fill up with the proper oil to give the sealant time to dry. Got the new axle shaft and sleeve as well, and the new bearings for the shaft are scheduled to be in tomorrow. So as soon as those arrive ill be in business..very excited! It really wasn't a bad job at all, I think the worst part was cleaning up everything and removing the old gasket material, other than that it went well.
