2000 John Deere 345 with Kawasaki engine.

I could use some help or direction.
My tractor been great however, (and this is the second time this happened). My fuel tank is leaking as a result of what appears to be a transmission fan blade rubbing it. My speculation is that the tank bulged above the fan far enough for blades to contact and penetrate it. Does this happens often or /normal? What should I do about it other then just replace the tank and broken fan?

I would check all the mounting brackets for the tank and see if they have become bent or broken. I am going to assume the tank is fairly hard plastic? I doubt it would swell enough for this too happen but who knows.

Well the tank is captured by the frame on the sides and there is no mounting brackets for the tank specifically . And on the top it’s captured by the body panel with the seat. In other words the tank just seats captured by the frame and panel with the seat from above. So there is really no bracket for the tank. I just wanted to see if I am the only one who is experiencing this phenomenon.

I'm assuming you are replacing the tank and I'd inspect the hub mount for the fan making sure it's fully seated. My first suspect would be that hub. I've never seen a tank on a 3xx series sag and especially not enough to come in contact with the cooling fan. Check everything closely. By the looks of your pics this wasn't an instant catastrophic failure, I would assume those two materials made quite a racket and it also seems plausible that the broken blade could have been the catalyst for the damage to the tank as opposed to contact causing the blade to break. Sometimes our minds eye sees something that should be clear cut but the sequence of events might be different. When inspecting things, keep an open mind.

Hi Fozsey and thanks for taking the time to help me. I remember that the tank was pressurized and when I opened the cap it almost deflated. I did think that was odd as the pressure released when I opened the cap. Maybe I made the cap too tight. As I said this has happened before (about 15 years) and you can see that I melter the hole in the last picture.
Maybe I need to come up with some cover over the fan to prevent the tank from bulging and contacting the fan.

Your vent in your cap isn't functioning properly. You should never have that much pressure regardless of ambient temp.

Ok now we are getting somewhere! So if I understand you correctly, the gas tank should not have much pressure. So is the vent in the cap there to prevent the pressure from building up or to allow air to inter to prevent vacuum lock?

And if it’s the pressure build up prevention vent then my speculation could be right that the tank inflated as a result of cap vent clog to the point of transmission fan contact?

So gentlemen would any of you be able to help me with the replacement JD part numbers?
I need the number for the gas tank, fan, and the hoses that enter inside the tank.



Also, shouldn’t both of them have the plastic tube (both should look like the one on the right in the picture) that inside the tank?

Any help is much appreciated

If memory serves me, the long one is a pickup and the short one is the return. As for a new tank, I THINK the tank is all the same one the 325/335/345 tractors. I woould look for a blown up one and put used parts on. I bet a new tank would be a small fortune... the hoses pictured above can be put back in...

JDSwan87. Thank you. I will fix the damaged tank as you indicated it’s $175 and just replace the fan grommets and gas cap. Thank you again!!

This is a fire hazard looking right at you. If this has happen to many tanks on the JD 345 tractors, it should come under a "recall" by Deere. If the tank did bulge some at the bottom, there should be a metal plate installed. It's a good thing the fan blades were not metal with they hitting the fuel causing a spark and fire. I also think the blades..one or more may have been hit by something such as a stick and rubbed the tank. I haven't taken a measurement on my 1999 345 to see how much room there is between the tank and fan. With this issue, there must not be much room there.
