2021 XUV590M maintenance

I have a brand new XUV590M that I bought late November of last year. It got to 100 hours and so it's been time for me to do a bit of maintenance.

All I have to say is that Deere did a HORRIBLE job of making this thing user friendly to work on by yourself. It is extremity awkward to work on. Does anyone have any helpful video on doing basic maintenance on this thing?

First issue: The oil filter was EXTREMELY hard to get off. I did not have a filter wrench that fit, and so I went to my dealer to get one, and was told that Deere does not make one for my machine. Weird. How is that even true? The shop did show me the one they use and so I went to an auto parts to get the same one. Problem was, with the skid plate on, I cannot get the wrench to fit in the space. Wonder if they take the whole plate off? Also, the filter was on unreasonably tight. I ended up having to drill holes in and use a long screwdriver to turn it. I can't begin to imagine how much torque was used to put that factory one on. I tried using a strap, but could not budge it.

Second problem was the spark plugs. The plug closer to the passenger seat is directly under a metal bracket and so you can't work straight down so I had to us a universal joint to get it out. Not a problem, until when trying to get the plug out I realized you can't even pull the plug out with the sockets attached because there isn't enough room until running into that stupid bracket. Thankfully I have long needle nose pliers and was able to grab it when it was still stuck to the socket, then pry the socket off, and then take each one out separately. A pain in the butt, but doable.

3rd, went to change the fuel filter, which according to the owners manual, is behind the drivers seat. I took the side panel off like the manual said, and I've look EVERYWHERE and traced every hose coming from anywhere near the gas tank to find the fuel filter, and I cannot find it for the life of me. Is it possible that my lines got installed without a fuel filter? There are no videos on YouTube of my model being worked on, but there is a similar gator, and his fuel filter is right out in the open. Am I just than dense? Or is it hidden in a special, secret location?

I'm no mechanic, but this machine seems very hard to work on. I have a 3025E and a Z530R and both of those have been very easy to work on for normal maintenance. This gator has been a PAIN to work on. Love the machine, but hate working on it.

Any helpful hints or tricks for these issues? Videos?

Gators are really tight to work on. The oil filter from the factory is probably installed dry. My first one was a bear to get loose. Since then I can unscrew them by hand after proper installation.
For Spark plugs I have a magnetic swivel socket from Gearwrench tools that gets around the obstructions easy enough.
I have the 590i so the fuel filter is a big plastic one bolted down. You need to remove the cowling behind the drivers side. I’m not sure how yours is set up.
Don’t forget to grease the driveshaft and rear lower control arms.
After your first round of maintenance it will be easier the next time.

I will look at getting a magnetic swivel socket. That's a good tip.
Ya, I took that panel off. It looks very similar to yours. The filter should be a big piece that should be easy to see. The manual says that it's right there 🤷‍♂️

I did grease the driveshaft and rear lower control arms, and those were easy to do.

Just wish they made it a little easier to work on. Similar to my zero turn.

My wife has the 590M also and so far I have just done an oil change. I had the same issue with the factory oil filter. I finally found a wrench that fit properly. I'll be following this thread to see about the other filters.

It’s typical for oil filters to be installed dry at the factory and be a bear to get off the first time.

This is the cap wrench I used - any 64mm one will work -

For the spark plugs I used a flex head ratchet which helped. I don’t have a magnetic socket but one the proper size that has a rubber insert to hold onto the plug.

The rest has been covered above. Any of these small machines are tough to work on - just need the proper tools and a lot of patience.

My dealer suggested this type. They said the socket style usually strip the filter on the first time filter change. I haven’t tried it yet, but hope it works.

I bought this type filter wrench , guessing 25 years .. IMO best oil wrench , Yes they make a larger size wrench also.

I have a 2018 gator. As mentioned, the first oil filter is a pain. After that no issues. I do change spark plugs every year & I do notice a difference in how it runs. As far as I know, the only fuel filter on them (gas models) is in the tank. No need to mess with. The air filter can be a pain just getting the housing cover off. I use long needle nose pliers for the tabs. No sure If your newer one is different. I just replaced factory battery in mine last week, that's not fun either. 🙃 love my gator though, it's so handy to have.

Curious that JD manual directs you to frame mounted in-line style filter… beautiful pictures.. but you just removed the left side to find nothing. Oh well.
Thanks
The fuel injected models have a large plastic filter bolted down there. Maybe someone forgot to remove some text or add text for the carbed version?

I found out the hard way….

My MY2020 XUV590M has the fuel injected liquid cooled 2-cylinder engine. The fuel filter is a round canister type that is in the fuel line (not in the tank). The second time when ordering parts for my annual maintenance I didn’t pay attention and ended up getting the wrong fuel filter - one that goes in the tank.

After a little research I found that the MY2020 will take different filters depending on the serial number. I guess they made a change somewhere mid production run.

Mine - earlier serial number -

And the one for later serial number which goes in the tank -

I always fight with the fittings on my canister type filter - but maybe I should consider myself lucky in not having to deal with the in tank filter…..

I agree with the lucky part.
Good post. (y)
