2025R Tweel Tires - Thoughts?

3627 Views 26 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  yelir
Hi all, I am a first time purchaser of a 2021 - 2025R tractor and have seen Tweel tires available for Zero turn mowers up to a skid steer. Any idea if there are compatible tires for the 2025R series, or what would be the drawback to having a set - other than not having the ability to put fluid in the tires?

I don't think they make them for tractors. I can't really see any benefit to having them, maybe if you were working in areas with a bunch of sharp objects.
I don't think the wheels could even handle the weight. a tiny tractor plus FEL and rear attachment can get to 3000+ lbs quick.

They make tweels for skid steers that weigh allot more than a 2025. So it could be done but finding the right sizes would be more than difficult, not to mention really expensive.

I was thinking this would be a great solution in my area, I have several Locust trees with 3" long thorns all over - they've been known to go right through shoes without hesitation - and would hate to have my tires get punctured.

Man, locust thorns suck, once you get into them, might as well throw the tire away. Foam might be a better option, thought about doing this to our gators but it's to heavy for those. Tweels are great till you put them on something that wears the tread.

Just a guess here, that for the the rear of a 2025R your going to be looking at the skid steer sizes.
I have a feeling that if built to handle the weight of a skid steer which would be a lot more then the 2025R, that would likely ride incredibly rough on a 2025R.

I think the issue is more that zero turns and skid steers have relatively fixed loads. Zero turns seldom carry more than itself, skid steers are assumed to always carry a ton (or the payload is small vs the curb weight) so the tires are kept rock hard.

Tractors might be used as a mower or they might be a plow vehicle, or might have a FEL & ballast. With pneumatic tires you can vary the pressure for the use/load but tweels are always the same stiffness... it'll either be rock hard when unloaded or too soft when you load it up.

What type tires do you have on your 2025?

I have a lot of locust plus thorn apples and jagger bushes. My first compact tractor was a 2210 with turf tires and was always getting flats from the thorns. Next tractor - my present 2520 - has R4 tires and never a flat in 14 years now.

The rubber of the R4’s seems to be tough and thick enough.

I'd think if they were available to fit Deere would be offering them all over their pages.

Here is Michelin's page for the Tweel. The Gen II 2-025R uses a 12-16.5 rear R4 tire and they do make a Tweel in that size. I don't see any that match the front tire size though.

For Skidsteers:

For turf equipment:

They also make these for UTVs, Gold Carts and some other equipment. But what I don't see are any shown with a bolt pattern that would fit any subcompact or compact at all.

I have R4's on the 2025R, The goal is to use a rear mount rotary mower to cut a path and clear out some of the trees which most happen to be Locust.

Comfort and load capacity is not necessarily a concern in this application. I will be driving slow with small loads, and I dont mind swapping tires out if I can find a set of Tweel's and avoid having to replace my tires every time they get punctured. I emailed michelinman since they are one source I found who manufactures them.

What's the ply on R4's? next time around I'm going to 10ply's on my ranger.

Maybe you could go with something like this:

There are a lot of different types of tire liners out there... these are the first that came up on my giggle search.

Not sure if tractor tires or such in general are the same way but a 10 ply or e rated tire for a vehicle doesn’t mean it’s actually 10 plys anymore.

Michelin got back to me, requesting for specs on the 2025R to check their availability of Tweel Tires.. I sent them below, however, there are 3 questions I had no idea on, any help would be appreciated - I'll update as soon as I hear back from them again with the limited answers I gave them...

Application Brand: John Deere
  1. Series model: 2025R
  2. OE Front Tire Size: 23x8.50-12
  3. OE Rear Tire Size: 31x13.5-15
  4. Bolt Pattern: (4 - Front) (6 - Rear)

The only answers I could not find or know how to measure... Anyone know what the answers are or what they mean by the following?
  1. Deck Width?
  2. Wheel Offset?
  3. Front Caster Size?

Good point, however, In my application clearing and maintaining a hunting path, I would be going slow or over rough terrain anyways where I'm not sure if I would notice a difference. From viewing different advertising videos on michelin's site, as long as I'm not jumping a concrete curb they look more flexible than thought.... Just my observation from a promotional video, so take my opinion with a grain of salt...

Either case, the main point I'm trying to avoid is having to replacing a tire out in the field, or being forced into purchasing a new tire along with the added cost if the tires are loaded.. Kind of comes down to if I want to have the discomfort in the seat or my wallet...

I am going to take a guess here that they won’t offer tweels for the little front tires that can get a heck of a side load when turning with a loader bucket full.

With a skid steer you don’t have steering tires.

So how many flats have you had? Or is this just something you imagine might happen. If so even if available that’s an awful lot of money to spend on something for what might happen.

You make a good point coaltrain, this is a hypothetical question at this point. It was a concern my neighbor brought up after talking about his own property, I probably should ask the same question to him. Either case, I'm already down the rabbit hole on asking for a price from Michelin...

I battle some thorny tire puncturing hedge apple and black locust trees as well.
I have always used tire slime with pretty good success over the years right now I have it in both my gators and the x758 mower. I am planning to put in the front tires on the 2025R, I would do the rear as well but I have liquid ballast in rear tires.
