Hey guys,

I did my first annual maintenance yesterday on the 2038R, and I have to imagine that there is a better way to change the fuel filters. Specifically the first filter under the floorboard. When I removed it, fuel just flowed out continuously at a fairly high rate until I managed to get the new filter on there. Probably lost 2-3 quarts of fuel. I can't use the old vice grips trick like I did on the 1025R because the filter housing back to the tank appears to be 1 piece aluminum.

Is there a shut off that I missed? How are you guys handling this? I was hoping the spin on filters would be easier to maintain than the plastic in-line but so far I'm not impressed.

I have to ask... did you shut off the fuel valve? I'm not sure what that would do though since the filter under the floor board is BEFORE the shut off valve. ;-)

According to the parts illustration there are two rubber lines coming off the back of the filter housing, perhaps you could clamp off one of those.

Yeah, I shut off the valve. Didn't help with the under-floor filter, but may have contributed to a less-messy secondary filter change.

I didn't notice those rubber lines. If they are accessible, that would definitely work. I'll have to look into that. Thanks!

As for the secondary filter, been there... done that... Couldn't understand where all the fuel was coming from and then glanced at the petcock and let out a DOIH!

Looking at the 2038R manual, at least they covered themselves by telling you to place a drain pan under the filter. It's like they knew. :)

I know a way to do it without spilling any fuel, but only for the 2032R.

Huh? The fuel filters on the Gen-2 2032R are identical to the 2038R. :dunno:

Okay I'll stop being a pain, even though it really bugs me to see people asking questions that apply to a model range and referencing only one model in that range. In the future, people searching for an answer for a different model from that range won't be able to find it. Better to say, "2032R 2038R etc."

Anyway...

I have changed this filter three or four times. I have never leaked more than a few drops of fuel. No fuel shut off, nothing. I just did what it says in the manual, which is to just spin it off and put a new one on, nothing else.

Do you have the fuel cap off/open? Are you waiting a really long time before putting on the new one?

If the answer to the above is no and you are still dripping fuel fast, and you don't want to clamp the fuel line for whatever reason, consider draining the fuel tank. It's easy, there's a drain plug at the base of the fender. You can drain it right into 5 gallon jugs, which fit underneath.

I agree with you but expecting everyone to reference all similar models in the title is probably asking too much. I mean, anyone with a Gen-2 2032R or 2038R probably already knows they are identical except for the engine. I have a 2720 and many times have created a thread with only 2720 in the title but yet I know and most owners know that the 2720 is pretty much identical to the 2520 and Gen-1 2032R.

I'm still struggling with encouraging folks to not post "I have a question" or "Problem with new tractor" posts. :)

You may be right. It just bugs me, that's all. I often search for problems using my tractor model number. I think a lot of people do. Shame they may not find the answers because folks can't be bothered.

How refreshing! Sometimes I think I am pretty much all alone in that I actually read and reference my manuals.

There's a lot of stuff that's obvious or that you can figure out easily. But the manual helps make sure you don't miss something that's easy to miss and make a big mistake. I reference the manual every time I do something, just to make sure I don't forget something. I've caught myself more than once about to do something dumb.
