If the snap ring holding the main drive shaft on breaks what is likkely to happen? Will the drive shaft come off?

Correct me if I am wrong but taking the snap ring off is how you remove the main drive shaft?

Welcome to GTT!

The snap ring prevents the pin from coming out. The pin holds the drive shaft onto it's splines.:good2:

2305 drive shaft - engine to transmission

Thanks for your answer.
Broken snap ring may not be cause for alaram but if the pin comes out then the shaft can come off?
A broken snap ring would not cause damage to the splines, would it?

No. Just get the snap ring back on so the pin doesnt fall out. If the pin comes out and the shaft comes off then you could have some damage.

2305 drive shaft - engine to transmission

The full story is that I sold my 2305 [121 hours] to guy who lives 200 miles away and after 15 days he gives the story of the missing snap ring and then after some prodding he tells me the drive shaft is loose at the rear end and apparently lots of vibration.
It seems the pin has not dropped out otherwise the shaft would be doing all kinds of bad stuff.
I am guessing the rear U joint has failed even though it was greased at the dealer at 108 hrs and after I goit it home I was under it 3 times trying to grease the main shaft, without success, but I know the u joint was ok.
I put my snow blower on at 115 hours and did use it because of the snowfall this year.
Anyone able to tell me if I am close in my guessing?
Thanks
Chris

Its hard to say. Sounds like the snap ring is unrelated to the other issues unless someone removed the snap ring to do work. The front U-joint is almost impossible to grease on the 2305 but the rear is easy.

Guess you just need to remove the driveshaft and inspect it.

I am assuming it makes noise all the time as the driveshaft runs the rear hydro which is running as soon as you start it.

Bad vibration that correlates with engine RPM? I would suspect a bad u-joint myself. Easy diagnosis though. With the tractor not running (obviously:laugh:) reach up and give the shaft a wiggle. If it moves around in an axial direction more than just a little bit, you have a bum u-joint. Sometimes the wiggle is just a loose fit of the splines on the shaft and yoke. It's best if you can see what has the play.

2305 drive shaft - engine to transmission

Have read that instead of replacing the whole drive shaft the Napa sells the u joints alone and these can be put on the drive shaft.
Are these u joints just a standard size? How is the old u joint removed from the shaft?
Thanks

I heard that as well. As far as the size, I don't know. :unknown:

I use the old school method of using a right sized socket, hammer and a vice to use as a press.

Best bet is to take measurements or take the driveshaft/u-joint in to have them match it correctly. If you have a driveline shop nearby, that'd be my first choice.
