2320 leftover part after splitting tractor

2238 Views 20 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Gizmo2
I had to split my 2320 to repair an oil leak and, when putting back together, I couldn’t remember or recognize where this part came from and I couldn’t find it in the photos I took. Anyone recognize it?

It looks like some kind of pivot for linkage but that is a wild guess and my post will bump it back to the top.

Thanks - My guess was a backing plate to reinforce a cast aluminum housing, but I don't see where it could fit.

Where was the oil leak?
What did you need to take apart to fix?

It was the transmission housing gasket. Had to open up the transmission to replace it. It was a big job for DIY but no leaks now.

Looks like a case reinforcement bracket that would span between two case bolts , as it doesn't appear to pivot or move when installed as there are no wear marks. I looked through the parts illustrations for the power train for a 2320 and didn't see it shown anywhere. Probably the closest I found was bracket number 19 shown in this illustration, which is serial number specific.

Thank you. I believe that you are correct, but I haven't been able to figure our exactly where it belongs. I did that too and I do have that part number 19 at the bottom of the case. I painted the parts when I had it all apart, so the wear marks are no longer obvious. I believe the part does span two bolts, I'm just not sure which and I want to be sure before I tear it back down to install it.

If it is the part you suspect, according to the drawing, it is external to the case. SB likely will recall the issue of a cracked tranny case a while ago in which JD had fashioned reinforcing brackets as a remedy. Your diagram part appears to span the 4 bottom bolts on the case and the part in hand is an earlier attempt. Just my farthing of a thought.

Right-on Giz. But if the drawing is accurate the bolts, short threaded, would be the give away. So were they used somewhere else or are they leftover too?

That's got to be it!!! Yes I had some longer bolts leftover too. Thank you so much. I know exactly where that is. Weird that there would be two stiffener brackets stacked on top of each other, but that's it. It that drawing from a TSB or should I have been able to find it on the JD site?

the drawing is from the JD site used by the aftermarket w/ or w/o permission maybe. However I believe Giz referenced a different tranny drawing, perhaps the one I spoke of in my prior post.

The part number for the replacement case substitutes to a new part number and I believe three "stiffeners". Apparently, mine wasn't the first case to break. By the way, the welded supplemented with RTV still does not leak.

I really appreciate the digging that you folks did to find this. Turns out that I actually could see it in my "before" photos but it's not easy to spot.

After sticking my nose in on DRobinson's problem a while back I went back and looked into these two stiffeners (not shown)...

I just now went to the first year 2025 tractor, basically the same tractor as the 2320.

Does your machine have both stiffeners?
Can you do me a favor and post up a picture of them/it installed?
I think I would like to add those if possible to my tractor.

Wherever that goes /went........the bolts you put back in are too long by the thickness of that part.

That may or may not be an issue but you better sort it out.
i just looked through the whole shop manual and nothing came up similar to the 2 shiffener photos above or in a keyword search for that part. Hope you discovery the mystery answer.

I just looked at my tractor, a picture would be next to impossible once the whole thing is installed back into the tractor.
Thanks for all the feedback. Yes, I do have both stiffeners. There is the one across the bottom, and then apparently the 2 stacked on the right side (just like the 2025 dwg above). I'll have to remember to look at the 2025 the next time I can't find a part. That one does look more like what I have. Also, regarding the bolt length, I didn't organize them very well when I took them out, so as long as they went in >3/4", I used them. I used some extra bolts I had, and yes, I had some left over. It's all making sense now. I'll try to get a better photo when I install, but I'm hoping to not have to remove the ROPS and fender again so we'll see how it goes.
