2520 & 2720 Fuel Tank Mounting

Well, here is an interesting problem I came across concerning the fuel tank mounting on my 2520. It seems the front mounting brackets are a little sub-standard. What happens is they flex along with the plastic tabs of the tank. When this happens the tank will shift forward enough to cause alignment problems with the fill cap and the relief hole in the hood. Once this happens, there could be enough missalignment to prevent the hood from opening. Or at the very least difficulty in opening the hood.

My first attempt at the solution was to add washers between the bracket and tank to get it back into position. This was only temorary as the problem re-occured. In my next attempt I removed the brackets and re-bent the angle. Currently this is working. Should this fail I will either modify the bracket to make it stronger or just re-design and make new ones. I am hoping that I do not have to do that. The one picture shows the bracket and where I bent it. The bend was made such that the angle was increased from 90 degrees. You have to adjust it to push on the tank to keep the front end of it up in the air.

Well, if you continue to have problems you could just trade up to a 3520...

(turnabout is fair play)

Of course it's clear to me that if anyone can make a fix, you and your shop are ready!

This same thing happened to my dads 2720 and he called the dealer and made them take it back. he had it for 1 week i think before this happened. It took them 2 weeks to figure out how to fix it but what ever they did it has not happened again.

I would be really interested in how they fixed it and if it will last. See if you can find out.

Ok talk to dad this weekend he said they ended up bending the mounts and told him that if it did it again they want it back and deere wants to see it. It was the first one they had seen do this. They also gave him a tractor to use when it happened, (i forgot about that)

Randy,are your brackets round bar with flattened ends? That is what they look like in the pic. I was checking mine and took a couple pics. Mine are made from flat bar.
Seems to be about 3/16 x 3/4. The tank actually feels pretty sturdy,but that doesn't mean it's not moving a little.

I think I'll put just an ever so slight less bend on the tank end and TIG weld a small gussett in the bend. Not sure what I can do on the frame end though. I was originally going to make new ones from 1/4 x 1 flat bar,but I think these can be made alot stronger.

Greg, mine are just like yours, flat bar just as you describe. Since I adjusted the bends I have not had a problem, doesn't mean I won't though. I will be very interested to see your fix. I am assuming you are have issues with this. I do know that if I have to make the bracket stronger I will probably over do it and start from scratch, may be aluminum bar stock with tapped holes. :think:

I think they are inadequately bent from the factory. i just took a look at my brand spankin' new 2720 and there is only minimal clearance to the hood at the front.

Randy and all,

So glad to see this post. My 2720 has had this problem going on 2 years now. I assumed that I must have inadvertently hit something to screw up the relationship of the hood and tank...in the heat of battle after I first bought it.

As you know, my JD folks haven't been too cordial to me in the past..so I have just lived with it.

My tank cap has been rubbing against the front of the hood hole and bent it up slightly so it has remained stable at that point..but knowing this really is good news...sort of.
I will investigate this problem this coming week!
At first I thought that the hood mounts had shifted...so I did initially loosen all of the hood mounting bolts to see if there was play there...but no. This gives me renewed hope that I can fix the problem.

Yeah, I don't doubt that. I don't think it is considered a serious issue. The brackets are really inadequate to hold 7.5 gals of liquid in place, along with a plastic flange on the tank.

Same promblem

Purchased new Sept 2010 closed hood in May 2011 and hood closed on cap.
I went to my J D dealer and told him the problem and he showed me one he had in his shop with the same condition, he asked what I wanted to do , I didn't want to be with out my tractor or pay for transport so he ordered a new tank and I put it in (bigger job than it looks) . By the way I tried to shim but it didn't work out

Did closing the hood on the cap do something to the tank itself?? Did the new tank have different (better) mounting brackets?
The problem most are having has nothing to do with the actual tank, but more so with the brackets that secure it.
