I removed the front driveshaft on my 2520 today and the front boot was full of crud. At the angle, anything including moisture that gets into the boot has nowhere to exit. My thought is that it would be better without it. My 955 had no boots over the u-joints.

Your 955 should have had a 2 piece boot/hard plastic with a hose clamp in the middle .
Fits snugly to front of trans and rear of front axle.

That seems to agree with what the parts illustration is showing. Although the boot part does not appear to be available separately. I tried removing the boot from my 2720 drive shaft once and didn't have any luck. The rubber is very thick and stiff. I figure if it ever really needs to come off it will have to be cut off and replaced.
