2630 Rear Hydraulics

Just started volunteering at a horse rescue and one of the projects I'm takin on is getting their 2630 up and running. Due to the cold weather this morning didn't see the actual problem but talked enough to narrow it down I think. The front loader has plenty of pressure so the pump should be fine. However, the rear frame mounted backhoe doesn't have any or at the least very minimum pressure. It appears the hydraulic lines go into a unit under the side of the seat which has an engagement level to activate the hydraulics for the backhoe. The lines run from here to a second box which is where the hoses from the backhoe actually connect. Hydraulic fluid runs out of this box when engaged. My guess is this is a pressure valve of some sort and has a bad o-ring. Could this box also be the cause of the no/low hydraulic pressure for the backhoe. (Sure wish I had thought of taking a picture when I was at the tractor.) Hopefully I've explained this well enough to get some help.

Welcome to this forum.
JD 2630 didn't normally have a BH attached. Photo is worth 1000 words so can you please post photos of BH control valves & their attachment to tractor hyd system? BH control valves need to be set up for 2630 closed center hyd system.
Thanks TX Jim. That may explain why I can't find anything in my searches. It will be a few days before I get back out there. Will make sure to get pics of the hydraulic setup plus figure out the backhoe model. Do know the backhoe has been on the tractor for a good while due to the faded paint all matching and the dirt/grime buildup.
You're welcome. I'm looking forward to viewing your tractor/BH photos after you had time to go back to tractor.
What transmission does the 2630 have? Not that it relates to your problem, just curious. I have the next size smaller, a JD 2030 with Hi/Lo transmission.

Hi-Lo-R on the left stick and 4 speed on the other stick.

Range 1,2 and r is on the left. Gears 1-4 on right. If you have hi-lo it is on the dash left of steering wheel. You either have 8 or 16 speeds pending whether you have hi-lo option.
On the left of steering wheel you have 3 options. No lever you have 8 speeds. Hi-lo you have 16 speeds or you have a reverser allowing you to change direction with no clutch

Correct, I, II, and R is on the left which I interpreted as Hi-Lo. Should have been more precise on the terms I used. Will be 8 speeds as no other control by the steering wheel.

Look at the OM. If you don't have a copy, download it from here JD Technical Information Store

It will show you the "live circuit" for attachments. Does it have a PTO driven hydraulic pump? Is there a diverter valve to shutoff the hydraulics to the loader when using the BH? Pictures will definitely help.
EXAMPLE of a Hi-Lo optioned tractor.

Turtle/Rabbit Lever = Hi-Lo Option = 16 speeds
No Turtle/Rabbit Lever = No Hi-Lo Option = 8 speeds

Correct backhoe valves set up for closed center hyd don't require a diverter valve to shut off hyd flow to BH valve. Just tee into system for BH hyd's

Thanks for the link to the manual as that will help a lot.

The BH uses the tractor pump, no PTO pump. (I did know to look for that option.) sIt is attached to the tractor via the break-away coupler. The leak is suppose to be in the coupler and I'm guessing a bad o-ring. So the remote cylinder level is used to provide hydraulics to the BH.

At least when I go back out there I have a little knowledge and better understanding of how things should be working. Enough at least to determine what the problems really all at least.

O-rings & backup washers where male tips plug into breakaway couplers are relatively easy to R&R.

That sounds easier than I was thinking. Does someone happen to have the a parts breakdown or instructions on replacing them. Also, what size are the o-rings or is it just bite the bullet and order from JD?
Parts can be found here JDParts

I'm going to guess your 2630 has the original style breakaway couplers. If my guess is correct you need to remove male hyd tip then using a tool similar to dental pick remove o-ring & back up washers(items 1 & 2) & install new parts in reverse order using ones index finger to set new parts in grooves.

I would just buy from JD. It's good to establish a relationship with your local JD dealer too.

Turns out the BH is a custom job, not even a John Deer.

Looks like a custom box to connect the hoses. You can just see a connector behind the post which is a needle valve adjustment of some sort.

The other end of the hoses connect to the standard break away coupler. Left connector is where the leak was suppose to be but beside being wet with oil, no sign of drips. So at this time will just leave it alone.

Not exactly sure what they used for the subframe. Do know it was modified at the BH end to add height so it would catch the top two mounting bolts of the BH.

The tag on the frame which you can see in the above pic just in front of the wheel doesn't clarify what it was originally intended to be used as.

So after looking at the BH some more to better understand it's setup, it was time to get it running. Voltage check of the batteries showed they were weak so I had to pull my truck in through the wet red clay and squeeze it between a trailer and the BH bucket to get close enough. With the jump start, she fired right up and smooothed out immediately which was nice being that it was still 35*. After moving the truck out of the way, started checking out the FEL. Except for the raise/lower hoses being swapped for some reason, everything worked as expected. With the hoses swapped though, float position is on the raise side and it's confusing to operate so I'll have to get that sorted out. Only thing I noticed was that the FEL wouldn't pick up the front tires off the ground but I didn't push the issue. Went to the BH end and figured out that to engage the BH have to push the remote hydraulic level to the back and hold it in place with a bungie coord. Checked for the leak at the BH couple and was pleasantly surprised for there not to be one. Everything on the BH worked as expected. The stabilizer legs will lift the tractor off the ground, but the bucket wouldn't. Next was the fun of moving the tractor which supposedly didn't have any brakes. Started rolling, hit the brakes and stopped. Tried again a little faster with the same results. So off to the front where I wanted to fix a soft spot in the parking area. The BH dug, the FEL scooped the dirt, and the brakes are strong enough to lock up a wheel. Did notice that it is low on hydraulic fluid as certain hydraulic functions were jumpy, but that is an easy fix. The other is the hydraulic pressure seems to be on the low side. I know that is adjustable at the pump and since the pump is new, doubt it has ever been set.

So my questions now are:
1) Just standard hydraulic fluid?

2) How do I adjust the pressure at the pump and can this be done without a gauge? My thought was to increase the pressure just enough so the FEL will pick up the front tires off the ground. If I must have a gauge, which gauge and where to connect it?

Over all it was a very good day!

That is a nice setup. My first thought was why didn't the person who installed the backhoe take a couple minutes to remove the 3pt arms. Obvious that backhoe is not coming off on a regular basis.

So everything works. That is good. You didn't check the hydraulic oil dipstick before running it and assuming it is low by the way functions acted? May or may not be true. Being the pump is new you would have to wonder if that really was the issue. Sounds like tractor needs to be gone thoroughly so you are familiar with it including a drain and refill of fluids and filters and a cleaning of the hydraulic screen. The only oil I recommend for that tractor would JD Hydraulic oil.

Check your Hydraulic oil and you will want to plug a gauge into the SCV (where backhoe plugs into tractor) and check pressure using a 2500 psi gauge min. Others here will confirm pressure which I should have memorized by now.

Do you know why the pump was replaced? I would get as much back information as possible because I'm thinking there could be a lot going on here with issues.

Another thought. Which hydraulic functions jumpy? If the backhoe it could be the backhoe is meant for open center hydraulic system where as that tractor is closed.
