3 Point bale spear PROBLEM

428 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  BOBL
Wanted to put out an FYI. Neighbor has two 3 point mounted bale spears, frame is made of 3 inch tubing. Both attachments split up the corner of the vertical tubing due to water getting into the vertical tube apparently around the bushing where the top spear mounts. There is no hole at the base for the water to drain. Took the angle grinder and cut the "crack out" welded the tube, drilled hole at the base to allow water to drain. Still has a slight outward bow in the tube but should be good to go. Neighbor was going to contact JD to see if they will warranty this.

Looks like you had some freezing weather

I don't see a manufacturer covering something like that under a warranty
Maybe could be a warranty issue if the upright is supposed to be sealed?
Freezing water is very powerful.
Neighbor is checking. Local John Deere guy was out last week. There should have been a small hole in the vertical tube to prevent collection of water and freezing. Engineers missed this one.

What does the top bushing area look like? Can you take a picture of that?

Looks like ChinA.

I've seen good squAre tube look like Pipe and never split.

Make them replace it......probly too late as you have repaired it.

Shame on Green

The top bushing is a two piece bushing. This is what allows the water into the square tube. On one of the spears the bushings were not quite lined up. Makes taking the spear out very difficult.
Sounds like a trip to tractor supply is needed.
