The small town where I grew up has held a haunted house for the last 25 years or so to raise money for the VFD (my brother is now the chief) and the Lion's club. They do a hayrack ride to the haunted house. My dad asked me if I would be interested in pulling a trailer with my tractor. Apparently one of the guys that usually helps has both his old tractors down. It would be Dad's utility trailer with small square straw bales for seating and of course people. I see my vertical load limit is 882 lbs with my draw bar. Its seems like maybe this would be a bad idea to use my 3038e. Am I wrong?

Surely someone can come up with a real 4 wheeled hay rack. If the 2 wheeled trailer is loaded right you would be ok I think

I've done hay rides before. Cautions .. with a 3xxx tractor level ground only. As Arlen says, loading is important. You're not going fast enough to get into a sway situation ( I hope) Keep people away from the front of the trailer. If they fall off, you'll run them over. I would recommend having a person supervising the crowd (children especially) while in motion.

They do have a person that sits at the front of the trailer to keep an eye on things. Basically it goes from the community center to the haunted house then back. Only part of it I am concerned with is the capability of my machine.

I started my tractor search at the 3038E because of the great value that they are. However, one of the things that I’m most interested in doing with my tractor is giving hayrides. Doing the math on weight, I decided I would be much better with a 4xxx series tractor to fo this safely to ensure weight is greater than that of the loaded haywagon. If you have lots and lots of ballast on your tractor you may be okay, but if you’re concerned weigh everything and make sure your tractor weighs more than your fully loaded trailer: That’s a minimum.

It can be very dangerous, so take safety VERY seriously. With that being said, don’t let fear keep you from having some and making memories.

I will certainly be making sure my wagon has rear facing lights. There will be plenty of adults. But we will be on public roads. My property is simply not big enough to conduct a substantial hayride that isn’t just lapping in circles. I will plan the route ahead of time to keep it on roads as straight and flat and low traffic as possible, and will probably even have a tail vehicle driving behind us for extra safety. Radios (walkie-talkies) are handy to have too to help with communication.
