I have a 345 John Deere that suddenly dies after I run it on a load for aprox 15 minutes. It starts right up but dies again. I cleaned the tank, replaced the fuel filter and loosened the gas cap, but still dies. The charging light seems to come on sporadically and usually before it starts to die. If I disengage the mower blades and run it slow throttle it seems to run ok and I can get it back to the shed. I know the clutch to engage the blades is making a racket when there is no load. Any ideas?

I have a 345 that would run when jump started, but as soon as you engage the PTO it would die out. Turns out the battery was toast, the alternator was enough to run the engine but nothing else. Battery on it's way out? Bad battery cable and/or connection?

First you either have a bad clutch (bearings). I would also measure the resistance of the PTO clutch, it should be around 4 ohms. It is less than 3 it will draw to much power from the battery and charging circuit. Over time it could burn up the wiring between it and the power source. Since that battery light is coming on it says the charging circuit can't keep up. So, take the battery and get it tested. Get a good DVOM, not a cheapo. You need to do some voltage checking and resistance checks to try to isolate the problem. So you have 3 things to start with.

1.) Get a good dvom (Digital Volt Ohm Meter) Read on how to use it and practice with it.
2.) Take battery to be tested (Charging, Load, Recharge). Like a NAPA store
3.) Manual for your tractor - TM1760 - Get it
4.) Check the resistance of the PTO coil with your DVOM
5.) Getting to the PTO, are you capable of the work? Do you have both SAE and Metric tools? It will take you from 3-8 hours to get to the PTO, it can be done faster, but you could end up breaking parts as you take them off (hood, fan, fan shroud, radiator - punching a hole or bending the fins)

What year is it.Your better off to get a new one.Take the deck off and start spraying between the pto and top pulley.Unplug the wire harness and 1 bolt on the bottom of the shaft. They rust on some you may have to spray it up with penetrating oil a few times.Light taps with a hammer on it will help loosen it.
