The lower seal on the gearbox is leaking - #3 in the attached diagram. Has anybody else replaced it? Can it be removed without disassembling the box? If the gearbox needs to be disassembled, how would one begin?

John Deere 60" MMM Gear Box

Thanks.

It may just be a press fit into the housing over the lower bearing. Sometimes you can carefully drill a couple of small holes in the seal face and remove it with a slide hammer. Check for radial play in the bearing and if it's tight drive the new seal into place using a sleeve over the shaft.

Good luck!

Thanks for the excellent suggestion - two small holes, a few gentle tugs and out it came. The bearing are fine, the shaft is clean and a new seal is on the way!
