I have a 2003 or so 5103 w/512 loader, no remotes. I want to use a hydraulic log splitter. I am getting conflicting info whether John Deere offers a power beyond kit for my "black engine" Deere. If not, can't I just rig one up by installing tees in the appropriate lines and use gated quick connections on the supply (powered) and return (tank)?
Anyone have a similar issue ?

Welcome to DT!

I went through this with another guy a while ago on TBN...

JDparts is not working now...but if memory serves me correctly your loader valve is mounted externally on the loader mast? And it has 7 (seven) hoses connected to it?

If so then you can simply use QD's (quick disconnects) and longer hoses to make you own PB loop at the rear of the tractor to plug in your splitter or even add other valves/rear remotes.

A picture of you valve will help...

Note that you cannot "Tee" into any high pressure lines since the hydraulic fluid will "take the path of least resistance" just like electricity does, and that will make it so you couldn't generate any usable pressure in either valve.

Where do I connect the new hoses ?
thanks
Great.

You will need to identify the PB port on the valve-it's probably marked BYD. This hose will currently goes to the transmission and feeds the 3PH rockshaft valve.

Now, remove that hose and have two new ones made in it's place, one to the valve and the other to the tranny, and install adequate sized QD's to join them in the middle. Your splitter will "plug-in" here. The line from the FEL valve will go to the IN port on the splitter, and the OUT port on the splitter will connect back to the tranny.

If that makes no sense to you then I can try to draw a crude picture.

Thanks Ken, here are some pics

here are some pics of my valve. The lines on the far left are from bottom to top are T , P and PB. These are connected to the transmission area, pump I guess.
The next lines from the bottom to top are B1 and A1, the lines on the far right from the bottom are marked B2 and A2.
Ok, what do I tie where ? and what are the plugs on the bottom and the rusty hex plug on the top?

I found this drawing online and modified it to address your situation better (I hope:laugh:)

In a nutshell:

P means PRESSURE or IN from the pump
OUT take unused or waste oil to the tank/reservoir.
PB or BYD takes unused oil and send it to the next valve in the series, usually the 3PH on our tractors.

So you want to interrupt/break the line that is connected to the BYD/PB port to add in your splitter.

Be sure to NEVER unhook this line when the tractor is running since it is carrying the full flow of the hydraulic pump and you do not want to cut that flow off.

Clear as mud yet? If not ask away please:good2:

I added the QD's to the PB line and all is working fine, with no leaks. Now I'm waiting on the delivery of my wood splitter. Thanks alot for the guidance !
WHAT! And no pictures?

Glad to help:thumbup1gif:
